The fifteen minute film will be followed by a Q&A featuring Eldur Heron Farm, Farias Farm and scientists from Washington State University. During the last four years, farmers across the Skagit Valley designed and implemented a research project focused on improving soil health with the support of a local network of service providers. Funded by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, farmers were paid for their time and learned new skills along the way.
Farmer panelists will be Francisco Farias, of Farias Farm, and Nate Minor of Eldur Heron Farm. Nate first participated in the Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture in 2016 and founded his farm in 2017, starting out as a market gardener focusing on annual vegetable production. In 2019, Nate began transitioning his operation more into seed and plant start production and education. |

Farias Farm was founded at Viva Farms by the three Farias brothers, Juan, Sergio and Francisco, after taking the Practicum in 2016. With many years of agricultural experience between them, the brothers grew the farm at Viva Farms together for many years. In 2021, Sergio and Juan stepped away to focus on other ventures, while Francisco and his wife, Lorena, took full ownership of the farm. In 2024, Farias Farm secured long-term land tenure just a few miles from Viva Farms in Burlington. You can read more about that transition here in English and here in Spanish via Modern Farmer. |

While the weather tricks us with its dance between winter and spring, we try to fit in workshops and more opportunities to gather before incubating farmers are really pedal to the metal in the fields. Already this year, we hosted After the Harvest: Markets, Milling, and Making Grain Work with Cairnspring Mills, Hedlin’s Family Farm, and Water Tank Bakery and another on Whole System Farm Design with Edge Perma. Thank you for coming out! Edge Perma is a regenerative agriculture education company dedicated to creating accessible, inspiring farm learning experiences. Coming up, we have Planting with a Plan, a farmer-to-farmer discussion focused on field efficiency and succession planting, on February 26th at Viva Farms Skagit County. And, on Monday, March 16th we are bringing back El Congreso de Agricultores Latinos with multiple sessions led in Spanish by various experts. This was one of our more well-attended events last year, and we are looking forward to doing it again.

El video de quince minutos será seguido por una sesión de preguntas y respuestas con Eldur Heron Farm, Farias Farm y científicos de la Universidad Estatal de Washington. Durante los últimos cuatro años, agricultores a través del Valle de Skagit diseñaron e implementaron un proyecto de investigación centrado en mejorar la salud del suelo con el apoyo de una red local de proveedores de servicios. Financiado por el Servicio de Conservación de Recursos Naturales del USDA, los agricultores fueron pagados por su tiempo y aprendieron nuevas habilidades durante el proceso.
Los agricultores panelistas serán Francisco Farias, de Farias Farm, y Nate Minor, de Eldur Heron Farm. Próximamente, tendremos "Plantar con un Plan", una discusión de granja a agricultor centrada en la eficiencia del campo y la siembra sucesiva, el 26 de febrero en Viva Farms, Condado de Skagit. Y el lunes 16 de marzo, traeremos de vuelta El Congreso de Agricultores Latinos con múltiples sesiones llevadas a cabo en español por diversos expertos.
