KRAKEN ARENA! LOCAL ONLINE TOURNEYS
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15

The Kraken is a free online scholastic chess club at Chess.com, open to students K-12 in Northwest Washington. It's an online space where local youth can find and play chess with other local players.

Every Monday* at 7pm the Kraken will host an online tournament.  It might be fast or slow, Arena pairings or Swiss, show up and find out!  This Monday it's Arena pairings for one hour, with clocks set to 5 minutes plus 5 extra seconds each move.

*Exception: On those Mondays when the NW High School League has an in-person event, there will be no Kraken event.

To join The Kraken: Set up your Chess.com account. Email WhatcomY...@gmail.com with your Chess.com name, real name, school, grade, and ask to join The Kraken.  You'll soon receive an invitation to join The Kraken within Chess.com. You're in!

Be prepared for a tough game of chess, as often the more experienced players show up to play.  You may not win a lot at first, but playing good players is part of improving!

4.
CHESS SIMUL IN MOUNT VERNON
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20

Dr. Jonathan Sarfati, a F.I.D.E. Chess Master (FM), will play 35 players at the same time.  This is your chance to play a chess master, and since he'll be distracted with 34 other games, your chances of winning increase!  Details above.

5.
NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE BETA TOURNEY

ALL 5TH - 12TH GRADERS WELCOME

Sponsored by the NW High School League, open to all 5th-12th graders, the Alph and Beta tournaments are back!  Three rounds of chess, in sections of eight players, clumped according to playing strength. If you score three wins, you've earned a medal.  See link above for more info.

6.
GET A FREE CHESS CLOCK!
If you already have a smart phone, that is.  Just download a chess clock app, and Voilà!, you have a chess clock!  Aficionados know it adds a whole new fun dimension to the game.  Here's a screenshot of the app "Chess Clock" in use - just touch your side to stop your clock, start your opponents. Pick the time control and color scheme you prefer. The little "5" shows the five second delay feature is active.
Get it, use it, add even more adrenaline to the game!
