1.
AUTUMN GRAND PRIX BEGINS SATURDAY OCT. 30
AT FERNDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY
PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED

The 2021 Autumn Grand Prix Quad Tournaments are open to any 2nd-12th grade players who want to play competitive NWSRS rated tournament games. Beginner players are welcome! You need to learn the rules of chess before you arrive.

Players will be placed in different playing groups of approximately equal playing ability based primarily on the latest ratings. Players will play in 4 player (usually) "Quad" sections. These feature three games, no elimination, with a time control of Game/25 minutes with five second delay per player. The tournaments are rated by the NW Scholastic Ratings System, so tournament rules are in effect: if you touch a piece, you must move it.

Experienced players in the top sections will be required to record their moves, so bring a pen or pencil. Score sheets and sets/boards will be provided, but bring a clock if you have one. It's a no elimination tournament, each player can expect to play three rated games. With the exception of the highest rated players, all players should be finished with their three games around noon.

Schedule for each Autumn Grand Prix Quad event:

**Check-in opens at 9:00am and please help with the setup, thank you! Check-in closes at 9:10am sharp. Don't be late! The quad format doesn't allow for late entries.
**Round 1 - 9:15 or asap
**Round 2 - 10:10 or asap
**Round 3 - 11:05 or asap

The above is a rough guide, there is no set round start time. As soon as all four players in a Quad have finished their first round games, they refer to the pairing chart, identify their opponent and board numbers for Round 2, and may begin their next games as soon as they're ready.

Autumn Grand Prix Prizes
Any player who competes in an Autumn Grand Prix Quad and posts a perfect score (three wins) will receive The Quad Pen. (An eCircuit four color [BGRU] medium-fine ball point pen.)

The top five players who accumulate the most points overall in all Autumn Grand Prix Quad tourneys will receive trophies, to be awarded at the conclusion of the final Autumn Grand Prix Quad. The top scorer will be declared 2021 Autumn Grand Prix Champion.

The Grand Prix formula favors players who play each week, and who are improving, so you could win if you put your mind to it! The current, updated NWSRS ratings will be used in each Autumn Grand Prix Quad. (If the NWSRS ratings haven't been updated since the last tourney, SwissSys estimated ratings may be used.)

MONDAY NOVEMBER 1
ONLINE KRAKEN TOURNEYS RESUME

The Kraken is a free online scholastic chess club at Chess.com for students K-12 in Northwest Washington. It's an online space where local youth can find and play chess with other local players.

Every Monday at 7pm the Kraken will host an online tournament.  It might be fast, or slow, Arena pairings or Swiss, show up and find out!

Exception: On those Mondays when the NW High School League has an in-person event, there will be no Kraken event.  Students itching for a game, who are not in the high school league, can still show up at the NWL site and play rated games in the NWL JV division, even middle schoolers and advanced elementary players. (In 2021-22, those NWL dates are Nov.8, Nov.22, Dec.13, Jan.10, Jan.31 and Feb.14.)

To join The Kraken: Set up your Chess.com account. Email randy...@ferndalesd.org with your Chess.com name, real name, school, grade, and ask to join The Kraken.  You'll soon receive an invitation to join The Kraken within Chess.com. You're in!

3.
NW HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE
WILL RESUME FOR 2021-2022

The Northwest High School Chess League took a year off in light of the virus, but league action resumes this year.  So far we already have teams from Blaine, Ferndale, Meridian, Sehome and Lynden in the league, and there's room for more.

The NWL hosts two pre-season meets, and NW League play happens on four Monday evenings throughout the winter months, the first one on Dec. 13. If you attend high school, and can assemble five players who want to joust with other high school teams in Whatcom or Skagit county, contact Sehome coach and NW League Director Randy Walther (RandyW...@msn.com) to get details.

Best regards,
