LAKE PADDEN QUADS
BRING SUNTAN LOTION
SUNDAY, JUNE 26

Update from organizer Randy Walther:

The Lake Padden Quads will be held at Lake Padden Park in Bellingham near the outdoor basketball court. We will be using vacant nearby park picnic tables for the tournament. These quads are open to scholastic chess players that were in 6th through 12th grade during the 2021-2022 school year. All interested players must register in advance via email by 8 pm on Friday, June 24th.

To register, email RandyW...@msn.com with your first and last name, the grade you were in, and your school's name. This event will be limited to a total of 16 chess players. All entered players will receive an email confirmation confirming your entry to play.

Time Control will be Game in 30 Minutes with a 5 second delay.
These quads will NWSRS rated. No entry fee, but please help set up and clean up afterward.
Check in will be 12:45 -12:55 pm. Be on time, do not be late! Three rounds.
Round One will start at 1 pm. Each subsequent round will start shortly after the end of the previous round.

If you own a tournament digital delay chess clock, then bring it. Recording the moves of your chess games is required until you or opponent has less than 5 minutes remaining on your clock. Chess player score sheets will be provided. You must bring your own writing instrument.

In the event that there aren't enough park picnic tables available, please have your parents bring with you portable folding tables and chairs, if your family owns any.

HOT SUMMER CHESS GRAND PRIX & ENDGAME CONTEST
BEGINS SATURDAY JULY 9
FERNDALE LIBRARY, for 2nd-12th GRADES

Website:  http://northwestchess.info/grandprix22.html
Pre-register:  https://forms.gle/km7B4UZ4KPuRotFo7

NEW: At GP1, every player will receive a prize
NEW: Endgame Contest is back, with prizes
NEW: Besides trophies, GP winners will receive quality print prizes

The Hot Summer Chess Grand Prix is a series of six Saturday morning tournaments.  You can play in just one, some, or all six.  Players are placed in "quads", sections of four players of similar ability, in a round-robin no-elimination format, so each student plays three games.

Players are expected to know how to play chess already.  Pre-registration is required, and players must check in before 9:10am or they'll be removed from the tournament.  (So don't be late!)  Beginners usually finish around 11am, advanced players about 12:15pm or so.

Quad winners with perfect scores (three wins) earn the Quad Pen. Players who score 2.0 or higher in a Quad will receive a chess book. At the first GP (July 9), every participant will receive a book prize. Players who earn the most wins over the course of the Grand Prix earn trophies and chess books.  For more info, see the Grand Prix web page above.

THE BIGGEST TOURNAMENT OF THE YEAR
WATCH IT HAPPEN
ROUND 4 IS TODAY (JUNE 21)

It's called "The Candidates Tournament", and it happens once every two years.  Eight of the best chess players in the entire world compete in a three week long (!) chess tournament.  The winner earns not only prestige and cash, but also the right to play World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway for the World Championship. The field of eight has players from Russia, USA, Azerbaijan, Poland, France, China and Hungary.

They play one game a day for three days, then a rest day, a total of 14 rounds. You can watch it live, or, like the Olympics, watch the highlights in the evening. You can learn a lot about chess listening to the commentators discussing chess in general, and analyzing the game moves in particular.  Chess channels around the world are covering it, here are three good ones:
