2022 ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
1000+ CHESSPLAYERS WILL COMPETE
APRIL 30 AT TACOMA CONVENTION CENTERWebsite:
https://wsecc.squarespace.com/.
Register in advance for discounts.
One of the largest chess tournaments in the entire USA is held here in Washington. It's the Wa. State Elementary Chess Championships, which pre-covid would draw up to 1400 young chessplayers. As of today (April 13), there's already 704 players registered. To get a feel for the vastness of this event,
here's a 40 second video of one of the playing halls. (Students, notice how quiet it is!)
Normally, not just anyone can attend -- to play, elementary players needed to score a winning record in a qualifying tournament. For the usual five round tournament, that means scoring 3 points or better.
Because of concerns about covid spread, the number of qualifying tournaments has dropped significantly. For example, Whatcom County used to have five or so. This year, only one, the Franklin Academy Qualifier. Due to the lack of qualifier tourneys this season, the qualifying criteria for Elem. State has been waived.
Middle school students do not have to qualify, so all middle school students can play. There are three middle school sections for players of different levels (rating).
Also, since
high school players were feeling left out of this hugest of chess festivals, there is now a high school division as well.

WHITE ELEPHANT QUICK CHESS TOURNEY
SATURDAY, MAY 14
FERNDALE, WAIt's a quick chess tournament! Five rounds of McMahon Swiss format, which means no elimination, every player gets five rounds. "Quick" means everybody will use clocks, set at 10 minutes per side with a five second delay, so all games conclude within a half hour. "White Elephant" means the price of admission is ... you must bring a white elephant gift! And those will be the prizes! First place gets first pick, second place gets second pick, etc. Unrated. McMahon pairings means there will be two divisions, so chess players K-12 of all abilities are welcome. Website with details will be up before too long, in the meantime, mark your calendars.
What's a white elephant gift? Any clean knick knack sitting in your attic, garage or room that you no longer want, but just maybe, someone else might get a kick out of. Examples: Old mug, a toy you no longer use, hat that's now too small, pack of gum, book you've read, new spare toothbrush, stickers, clean funky socks, Shrek bandaids, stuffed animal, rubber pickle, bacon flavored toothpaste, fidget spinner, cool mask, Bertie Bott's Jelly Beans, deck of cards, pretty much anything, search the attic, dust it off! Does not need to be wrapped.
