WINTER GRAND PRIX VII & VIII
SATURDAY, MARCH 19 and 26
AT FERNDALE PUBLIC LIBRARYFor 2nd - 12th grades, pre-registration required.
Info, and to register:
http://northwestchess.info/gpwinter22.htmlThe Winter Grand Prix is a series of eight Saturday morning tournaments. You can play in just one, some, or all. Players are placed in "quads", sections of four players of similar ability, in a round-robin no-elimination format, so each student plays three games.
Players are expected to know how to play chess already. Pre-registration is required, and players must check in before 9:10am or they'll be removed from the tournament. (So don't be late!) Beginners usually finish by 11am, advanced players about 12:15pm or so.
Quad winners with perfect scores (three wins) earn The Quad Pen. Quad winners without perfect scores earn The Keychain. Players who earn the most wins over the course of the Grand Prix earn trophies. For more info, see the Grand Prix web page above.

ANNUAL FRANKLIN ACADEMY STATE QUALIFIER TOURNAMENT K-8
SATURDAY, APRIL 16, BELLINGHAMInfo and registration pageWe used to have several Elementary State qualifier tournaments before the virus. This year, there is but one! Elementary students K-6 who post a winning record (three wins out of five games) qualify to play in the State Elementary Championships. Players of all abilities are welcome to play, as the Swiss pairings (no elimination) quickly end up matching players of similar abilities. The tourney will be a classic five round swiss, one hour per round, with multiple divisions for different ages, and trophy prizes.

2022 ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
1000+ CHESSPLAYERS WILL COMPETE
APRIL 30 AT TACOMA CONVENTION CENTERWebsite:
https://wsecc.squarespace.com/Register in advance for discounts.
One of the largest chess tournaments in the entire USA is held here in Washington. It's the Wa. State Elementary Chess Championships, which pre-covid would draw up to 1400 young chessplayers. As of today (March 18), there's already 472 players registered. To get a feel for the vastness of this event, here's a
40 second video of one of the playing halls.
Normally, not just anyone can attend -- to play, elementary players needed to score a winning record in a qualifying tournament. For the usual five round tournament, that means scoring 3 points or better.
Because of concerns about covid spread, the number of qualifying tournaments has dropped significantly. For example, Whatcom County used to have five or so. This year, only one, the Franklin Academy Qualifier. Due to the lack of qualifier tourneys this season, the qualifying criteria for Elem. State has been waived.
Middle school students do not have to qualify, so all middle school students can play. There are three middle school sections for players of different levels (rating).
Also, since high school players were feeling left out of this hugest of chess festivals, there is now a high school division as well.

FEATURED WEBSITE: CHESS TVhttps://www.chess.com/tv/scheduleA student asked me this week, "Can I watch chess players on TV?" Yes, you can. And watching good players play, while they explain their moves, or commentators discuss their moves, is a good way to enjoy the game and improve.
There are many websites that provide live coverage of various chess tournaments. One option is ChessTV, which is the Twitch channel for Chess.com. If you check their schedule, you'll see quite a variety of Twitch chess streamers on their channel. Some streamers are just playing random live games and may use adult language, so parents will want to moderate kids' usage.
Actual tournament coverage might provide the safest and most instructive option. For example, this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 1pm, there's coverage of the 2022 Rapid Chess Championships, with a sizeable prize fund at stake.
