CHESS JAM IN FERNDALE, NOW ONLINE
THIS SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 2020

The 23rd Annual International Chess Jam will take place online, Saturday!

It will take place via The Kraken online chess club, and open only to players in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, San Juan and Snohomish Counties.  Advance entry is required.

Entry is free, there are online prizes, there will be "door prizes", it will be rated, and it will be livestreamed, so friends and family can drop in and check it out.

Enter before 7pm this Friday, April 17.

2.
SATURDAY, MAY 2, 2020
THE STATE ELEMENTARY & MS CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL HAPPEN
IT'S ALL BEEN MOVED ONLINE
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS REMOVED
(ENTRY FEE INCREASES APRIL 19)

Information page:   https://wsecc.org/
Registration page:  https://chessreg.com/wsecc

The biggest tournament in Washington State usually takes place at the Tacoma Convention center, with over 1400 young chessplayers K-8 showing up to do battle for state titles on a Saturday in spring.  With coronavirus closing all such gatherings, we assumed it would not take place.  WRONG!  Due to the much appreciated hard work of the WSECC board and staff, it'll happen online at chesskid.com!

And usually players have to qualify to compete by scoring 3 or more wins in a 5 round tournament.  Since not all qualifiers could take place this year, that requirement has been suspended, so all players K-8 can compete.

It will be rated, there will be seven rounds instead of five, they'll use special one-day accounts at chesskid.com, trophies will be given, and it may be livestreamed.

JOIN THE KRAKEN
LOCAL SCHOLASTIC ONLINE CHESS CLUB
EVENTS ON MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, THURSDAYS, SATURDAYS

The Kraken is a freshly established free online scholastic chess club for students K-12 in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, San Juan and Snohomish Counties.  There are currently 71 members.

Three weekly tournaments are being offered:
Kraken Crazyhouse tourney, Monday evenings 7:00 - 8:00pm
Kraken Splash tourney, Wednesday evenings 7:00 - 8:00pm
Kraken Duels, Thursday evenings, one slow game at 7:00pm
Kraken Battle tourney, Saturday mornings 10:00 - 12:00am

(What is Crazyhouse Chess?  Fun and crazy, that's what.)

Most events use Arena pairings, which means you can enter the tournaments late or leave early.  And pairings are quick, you're paired right away with whomever is available.

Some events use the standard Swiss pairings. Prizes are virtual medals.

Parents can join also, not to play but to encourage, watch and learn with their kids.

For more info or to join, sign us with chess.com, then visit https://www.chess.com/club/the-kraken.  Questions, email club director Randy...@ferndalesd.org.

LOCAL YOUTH CHESS EVENTS LIVESTREAMED

The Stone/Randy/Tanner team will be livestreaming various Kraken tournaments, either on the Facebook page NW Washington Scholastic Chess, or the Twitch account Radmando4.

We'll be watching and enjoying the games in progress, checking on the standings and pairings, explaining basic chess strategy, answering questions from viewers, discussing the local scholastic chess scene, showing viewers how to navigate Chess.com, etc. It'll be local, home grown and fun.  If you catch one live, give them a Thumbs Up, a Wow, or a Share.

The two shows so far are at https://www.twitch.tv/radmando4/videos
