WINTER GRAND PRIX II
THIS SATURDAY, FEB. 5
AT FERNDALE PUBLIC LIBRARYFor 2nd - 12th grades, pre-registration required.
Info, and to register:
http://northwestchess.info/gpwinter22.htmlThe Winter Grand Prix is a series of eight Saturday morning tournaments. You can play in just one, some, or all eight. Players are placed in "quads", sections of four players of similar ability, in a round-robin no-elimination format, so each student plays three games.
Players are expected to know how to play chess already. Pre-registration is required, and players must check in before 9:10am or they'll be removed from the tournament. (So don't be late!) Beginners usually finish around 11am, advanced players about 12:15pm or so.
Quad winners with perfect scores (three wins) earn the Quad Pen. The players who earn the most wins over the course of the Grand Prix earn trophies. For more info, see the Grand Prix web page above.

WEBSITE SPOTLIGHT
chessKIDS ACADEMYThe most popular chess website for kids in the USA is
Chesskid.com. But a lesser known page worth examining comes out of England, which has a huge chess culture. The Brits host the UK Chess Challenge, the largest children's chess tournament in the world, with over 40,000 participants each year. (Look it up!) ChessKIDS Academy (at
http://chesskids.me.uk/kidzone/) assumes your child can read, and presents lessons in an interactive way, with a sense of humor. And it's free. With no ads. Amazing! Check it out.
