KRAKEN WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEST
GUESS WHAT THE CHAMPS WILL DO
WIN TINY PRIZES To enter:
https://forms.gle/yTNU1zQT4vsGRNBN8 World Ch. Overview:
https://www.chess.com/article/view/world-chess-championship-2021The match to determine the Chess Champion of the World happens every couple years, and it began Friday, November 26. World Champ Magnus Carlsen, of Norway, is defending his title (successfully, it appears) against challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi (a.k.a. "Nepo") from Russia. You can watch the games in real time, with commentary from famous grandmasters, at NBC Sports and Chess.com.
Make a guess prediction for different questions for each game, and you're in the running for either an ice cream cone or a chess keychain! The winner of each guessing contest is the answer that comes closes, without going over. (In case of a tie, the younger guesser wins.)
It's a 14 game match, so you get 14 guesses! Be sure to make your guess by 9pm the evening before the game. You can change your answers up until that time.
Tiny Prizes will be given out at the Saturday Grand Prix tournaments at the Ferndale Library. Limit two prizes per player. Only students K-12th grades in NW WA can participate.

NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL CHESS LEAGUE
BEGINS MONDAY, DECEMBER 13
Ten high school teams are entered in the 2021-2022 NW League this season. Blaine, Sehome, Lynden, Ferndale and Meridian have each entered two teams, and will battle it out over two months to determine the NWL Champion, and for the coveted spots to the 2022 Wa. State Chess Team Championships.
It'll be Round Robin, so every team will play every other. A team is five players -- the top player on one team plays the top player on the other team, and so on down the line. At each meet, two rounds (games) are completed. Each game is played with 40 minutes per side on the clock, and a 5 second delay.
If snow or wind or flood doesn't intervene, here is the schedule.
Dec. 8 at Sehome HS
Jan. 10 at Lynden HS
Jan. 31 at Ferndale HS
Feb. 14 at Sehome HS
There is a JV section at each event. Middle school players who would like to play some rated games are welcome. Email
randy...@ferndalesd.org for details.
