| Here’s a safety lesson that you can apply to your own life… Especially if you’re about to travel anytime soon. Anyone who lives in the Washington, DC area is familiar with Washington Dulles International Airport. I’ve flown out of that airport more times than I wish. When you’re in the intelligence business, that is the airport you fly out of the majority of the time. But guess what happens when a spy returns from a trip and lands at Dulles Airport? Do they have someone waiting at the entrance with a sign that says, “welcome home Jason”? Do they just go straight home or straight to headquarters as soon as they land? No and no. First, when a spy is returning from a trip, they maintain their cover the entire time. Let’s say your cover is that your name is Adam Smith. Obviously, it would not look good if your wife and kids met you at the airport and said, “Hi Jason” when your cover name is Adam. If a foreign intelligence officer has followed you because they think you might be a spy… Then they’ve just confirmed that fact because your names don’t match up. (And now they know your true name.) You also don’t go straight home or straight to work. You run a surveillance detection route to make sure that nobody is following you. And, if the operation is truly serious and you’ve been in some really dangerous country, then you’ll have counter-surveillance waiting for you at the airport. Keep in mind, you won’t acknowledge the counter-surveillance team at all. They are just watching you in the airport to make sure that nobody is following you and, again, they will make sure nobody is following you once you get in your car. Now, I realize you’re not conducting espionage operations overseas when you land at your local airport… But maybe some foreign intelligence officer suspected you of being a spy and was following you. Or maybe it’s just some petty criminal who thinks you’re rich. When you land at the airport and are headed home, just look in your rearview mirror every now and then to make sure nobody is following you home. It’s simple to do and I still do it to this day every time I fly home.
