Hey, I would be happy to teach fellow mates how to cook couscous, Tunisian way, with a bunch of variety: with lamb, beef, fish Mahdian, Djerbian with herbs and meat cubes etc. A lot of people love couscous but cant find a good place to enjoy a truly authentic recipe, so think everyone will be thrilled to learn how to make his own couscous. The purpose is to demistify the way to cook it and explore the history behind this landmark Tunisian meal.

Im not sure how to get organized. I suggest I cook a couscous day before, then demonstate how to cook it, then we can eat the previously cooked couscous. We can have a slide show on couscous history.

Since my place is small, Karine will be hosting us. Maybe 7-10 people and date can be end of march. Tbd.

Let us know your thoughts and can work with you to design the communication (picture, crisper outline)

Best,
Nayim

Welcome to the Food Club! Here’s what is on the menu this week…

  1. Introducing: Student Chef Classes
  2. Student Chef Dinner Updates
  3. Buck a Shuck Oyster Party!

Introducing: Student Chef Classes

Given the great success we’ve had as a club with Student Chef Dinners, we’ve decided to try something new that we’re calling Student Chef Classes. Student Chef Classes are an opportunity for student chefs to share their skills in the kitchen by teaching a group of members a unique cooking-related skill and for those of you with food start-ups, it’s a free way to get some publicity

You can get creative with what you’re teaching, but to get you started we’re thinking that classes could be either categorical classes (e.g., knife skills, homemade pasta making, or bread baking) or ingredient-based classes (e.g., how to cook scallops, how to make pastries, how to braise meat). We’ll be covering the cost of the class and it should be a great way to get to know more club members and have a fun experience.

If you’re interested in hosting a class please email us by 2/9 and tell us the following:

  1. Proposed topic
  2. Why you want to teach this
  3. How big a class you can host
  4. Estimated cost
  5. Two or three convenient dates

If the class is approved, we’ll let you know and you’ll be able to show off your skills on our dime.

Student Chef Dinner Updates

Diners: We’re excited to have kicked off this quarter’s student chef dinners with our first dinners taking place last week. One issue we’re seeing is that many people are currently signed up for more than 1 dinner. If you are, please go to this Google Doc link and chose which one you want to attend. We’ll give you until the end of this week (2/9) to do so, at which point we’ll keep you on your first dinner and take you off any subsequent ones.

Hosts: If hosts have spots for upcoming dinners, please publicize it on the Facebook group to fill the spots. Also, please find attached the reimbursement doc (remember, it’s $10 per diner – including the chefs). Reimbursement requests should be sent to Lilly Li (lill...@wharton.upenn.edu) within a month of your dinner.

Buck a Shuck Oyster Party!

Love oysters, but hate paying $4 per bite – we’ll we have the solution.

Introducing the buck a shuck. We’ve partnered with Doc Magrogran’s for an extended oyster happy hour from 4-:30-7:30pm on February 19th. We’ll be covering not only your first drink, but also all the oysters until our budget runs out. Then, they’ll still be only a buck.

For restaurant capacity reasons, we have to limit the number of people who can come but have negotiated the entire restaurant, so we’ll have space for just over 100. Think of it -- while they do the shucking for you, you can avoid Drexel kids, hang out with your closest friends, and focus on getting your post-Valentine’s Day Aphrodisiac on…

Tickets can be purchased here starting at 9pm tonight [we won’t be sending a follow-up link later to avoid SPAMing you]

This semester, we’ve got a lot coming up. More restaurant events, the premier of student chef classes, more dinners and more fun. Be on the lookout for an al fresco dining feast when the polar vortex finally leaves us and enough food that even if none of us find jobs, we can still comfort ourselves by eating our feelings.

Thanks,
The Food Club
