I have tried for 3 days to get in touch with my housekeeper Grace Ayala. Has anyone heard from her.

We have electricity 
So we have refrigerators!!
No air yet and no tv or internet or Wi-Fi 
But have refrigeration key

So if you want to lend your condos I don’t see a problem since families could eat.  

No pool yet and limited employees who are exhausted!

Great of u all to lend - especially to employees 
( Jason just said he would give anything for a good night’s sleep.

Tod an amazing manager. One couldn’t ask for more. Upbeat, happy, talks to all, been here almost every moment. I think he went home to change his clothes!!  Mila a wonder as is Kaileo.  NATHAN.

We offered our unit to Mila right after I read a post about her sleeping on her couch in her office. . She asked if Celso could take it which we said of course. (Utilities supervisor) head of maintenance for air conditioning, plumbing, etc.
 Please reach out to Mila so one of our employees can have a nice bed and shower😢

Glad to hear all management and employees pitching in.
I talked to Karen Kondo yesterday,  She has a place in Wailuku but may be staying in our unit shortly.  She is (of course) very stressed but amazingly strong and positive.
She lost track of Tommy and Bella for 3 days but they are safe.

I took a long walk toward Lahaina and right at the chart house you can go no further. Odd looking across highway as I’m walking thru the park and seeing one small area totally gone and the house next to it fine with green grass - off and on like that until old charthouse and then that back road into the back side of Safeway is blocked off. I maybe saw less then 10 people the whole 2 1/2 miles and they were mostly workers.   Across from the other side of the highway where houses burned, you can see gray areas left on my path from the heat of the fire!  Then you come back here and it’s a different world. 
We now got the elevator back.
Still no Wi-Fi or internet. 
No grocery stores open 
Mall next door and all other hotels and restaurants closed and totally empty.

Moku Roots was going to move into the Chart House.  That would have been so cool!  Oh well, we are all on a different route now.  We will see what Lahaina becomes.

I am on the other side, with Bari, my son and his dog.  Haven’t been back yet: Puamana is restricted and my place burnt to the ground.  I’d like to get some pictures for insurance and will at some point.

It’s great that The Whaler survive.  I need to get the dog to the mainland then I’ll come back to 1115.  Aloha,

Our unit 1273 is available, I believe, but not cleaned and I believe have prior guests luggage etc. left in the unit, as the last we heard from them Wednesday was that they were going to the airport without their stuff.

All of Mary’s units I took care of necessities like frig, garage toilets.  All good. A few things soaking and I’ll go back later today and finish washing. 
 Need anything let me know but really, I’m exhausted - how does Mary do it all!!

Just remember everyone employees who lost homes whether they rented or owned, lost all clothes, underwear, shoes, etc. That’s very diff than those  who lost employment and can get unemployment.  Eline who works at golf course said her highlight was finding a couple of bras to buy. They escaped with the clothes on back and that’s it.  Try to imagine that.

I’m not speaking for Doug but he has already said he will distribute to the Managers of Aston, AOAO and TIAO based on number of employees they have working at The Whaler and they will distribute to the individuals. I think most agree that we hope most of the funds go to those who lost the most. We can each reach out to those managers to voice our wishes but the onus should not be on Doug as we are all so appreciative of what he did and we shouldn’t make it any harder on him then it already has been.

Maui now is a media company.... not an official government entity...

 plenty of media personnel are opining, injecting their own opinions, interpreting, projecting, editorializing etc. what they believe is true, 

I'm just looking at what is actually said on official government correspondence.

This is normal for addressing hotspots
They will stay all night to be sure all hotspots are out
The Lahaina fire may have reignited due to hotspots after they left. No one will make that mistake again.

How about you suggest the basement lounge remodel be suspended as well.  Permanently suspended would even be better.  We dont need to spend an extra 1 million dollars on this project now, or ever.

if there were to be any construction halting as a result of the fires it would certainly be for the basement/lounge...not the sprawling project which affects the structural integrity of the Whaler building.

What is the process to bring a motion to the board to cancel the $1M waste of money project in the basement.

Can owners bring a motion?

Can owners get board members to bring a motion.

What happens when the board doesn’t care what owners think and do it anyway? Which has been the case over the past year or so.

What are the repurcussions?

Agree we need to at least pause the $1M boondoggle in the basement. But what is the exact process to do so at the upcoming meeting?

Perhaps a board member here can answer this for us.

As a frequent user of the gym during my interval over the years, I find that there is not sufficient space for stretching, yoga or similar mat work in our gym. Couldn’t that space become an extension of the gym and become a space for these complementary health and wellness activities? The renovation costs should be less. 
As a Canadian, my flights back to the mainland are always later in the evening and I find it very convenient to hang out on a poolside lounge chair and would not really utilize an underground ‘lounge’ especially at a cost.

Re: Basement lounge .  I asked many renters on the elevators - people I didn’t know - if they would use such a lounge. Every single one said no. They would either book a late exit from room, use the pool area, the lobby area or browse around the other side and have lunch or dinner. 

I wanted from the beginning when this was mentioned, an extension of the exercise room which has aged over the years with terribly thought-out lighting that has never been fixed. Better yet, an outside exercise room!!  

In regards to renters:  They are renting big blocks of rooms to the Red Cross. 
Like maybe 100?  Just a guess. Jun and family moved out to go north.  No kids here. 
I was wondering how they decided who gets the rent and what rooms they rent out. Most are here for three-week increments. Do those who stayed with Aston, or those who went with HEI  get the rent and what about the owners who rent independently?  I just wondered about that the other day how they worked that out. 

I have some friends who own a two- week interval who decided to go ahead and come Sept 5 - they are in their 80’s but spry!

Thanks Diane!  I do have someone who was displaced staying in my condo for a few weeks at no charge.  I do rent independently.  I am hoping whoever is putting people up in other units do have permission from the owners.  Yes, to a better exercise room and no to the ridiculous lounge.

Where are all these Red Cross guests eating?  Is anything open?  Are they just cooking in their rooms?  BBQ?

I can answer this!

 

There has been very limited communications from anyone…but I was able to talk to Aston and got the details which are very enlightening.

 

Aston signed an agreement w Red Cross for any Aston property on Maui to rent rooms to Red Cross at generally the market rate. That absorbed all the red cross rooms needed. It was a very smart move for Red Cross and Aston.

There are two grocery stores open for them. Times and Napili.

Aston is servicing the rooms and providing for damage insurance and such.

Other rental managers are not specifically part of that program. Its Aston. And Aston rooms first and foremost.

But HEI or others may sign their own agreements with Red Cross or victims. If needed.

I just know about the Aston one.

 

The rent is shared as normal in the new Aston rental agreement (70% for premium rooms goes to owners).

GET and TAT and Maui Tax also as normal.

 

All or most Aston rooms at Whaler are expected to be full through October 31st. Only after that date will regular bookings start occupying rooms.

People can book now for after Oct 31st. Not for before.

That does mean if you are with Aston your room may be full through the empty period and you will get paid.

 

The hotel managers met with the Governors office last week and all agreed to adhere to at LEAST October 17th (meaning no tourism until after that date).

HEI, Aston and others were all invited and I assume present.

Obviously many properties are now laying off workers this week.

That date seems crazy to me, but the Governor himself came up with that date and he isn’t changing it best I can tell.

I did call and email and beg to no avail.

Thats what he wants - for good relations with locals and to honor all that happened.

Which is understandable, but layoffs are also not what was needed.

I personally think he over compensated. But it is what it is. I am not the Governor.

For Aston I believe no one is laid off because they are busy with Red Cross.

I don’t know about HEI since they have no bookings. But still must maintain the property.

Also HEI was just in the process of creating their website and marketing which doesn’t seem fully fleshed out yet. Its hard to find it. I searching you’ll likely land on the many Aston sites long before you find the HEI one. But thats fair game of course.

Given Aston is listing units broadly (their own websites, a custom one that lists actual units to book, and all AirBnB and similar sites) they have had years to refine and own marketing Whaler. Plus the backing of Marriott and that corporate marketing machine with joint airline and tour deals. They weren’t perfect but it’s a big well-tuned machine. And since they lost the main contract they have seemingly doubled their efforts to own the largest share of bookings at Whaler.

 

My sense is it will take some years for HEI to be able to match the incoming lead volume and thus booking and revenue and pricing levels. If they can muster the marketing budget that Marriott/Aston is able to do.

Someone’s bringing in food for them in containers. And I think our workers get some too.  There was a big truck the other morning out at loading dock and lots of employees eating and I see them in basement with those brown containers of food. No one has been at bbq.   No one in pool.  Tell Bari I will have cute clothes for her on Saturday!    Most owners I know here go to Costco and get food. Times open. Safeway and Walgreens okay but not open yet.  TS was trying for Sept 5  if possible of if not the 10th. 

I was just in the  lobby - Red Cross set up around that big long table. One person had a nasty cough 😳 so I got out of there. I wanted to say if you are sick please stay in room as that flimsy little mask isn’t going to protect us!!🤭 and my Dr Johnsens office is gone.

Hawaii is ranked the worst governing body out on all the states but the best people. Definitely true!😋.

Remember that Aston serves other properties west of Lahaina (MKV, Kaanapali Shores, Mahana, for example), Kihei and around Hawaii, where they are able to provide jobs to employees in lieu of laying them off.  I heard Aston is taking good care of their staff as their own Ohana.

I was just reading the Governors proclamation.  It states “visitors are discouraged from visiting West Maui”.  It does not state that visitors are not allowed.  Any thoughts?

Thank you and I’m happy I could help (helping others always feels good doesn’t it!).  So many here have done so much for me too!  And for others. This working group here now has worked amazing well together - a real Ohana!

Jeanne Reynolds sent me 12 boxes of clothes to pass out to those who lost everything and our employees loved them - cute clothes too😁. 
Kaleo who is now with HEI is the best and stops at Costco for me and gives me fun food that the Red Cross brings in like the giant cinnamon roll from the bakery.  Nathan always cleaning and helping. Mimi told me the reason she stayed here was because she loves the Whaler owners and people. 

A few friends have sent me money or cash to hand out to those in need.
So everyone is doing their part as we are all given gifts and it feels good to use them to help others❤️

If you don’t answer they call or text my phone!  If you go back there they are so so organized and friendly.  I told them I couldn’t go down the other day as I didn’t feel well and I never go among ppl if I’m “under the weather”!  They ran it up to and I  didn’t even ask them too. Then they checked in to make sure I was okay and to let me know if I needed anything to just ask.  I’m fine now and went down today and they are so organized in the packages area. Kaleo is in her element there. She is amazing as are the others I have met!!  It feels good!
