In just 48 hours, 89 people in Haiti have died due to the cholera epidemic that broke out on 20 October. The number of casualties that has caused this epidemic is 1275, according to Health Ministry figures.
In the capital, Porto Prince, where most of the victims of the earthquake occurred on January 12th live, sanitary conditions are nonexistent, and the death figure is steadily increasing.
The allegations that peacekeepers of the United Nations, and in particular the last shipment arrived in Haiti in October after an outbreak of cholera in Nepal during the summer, are responsible for the outbreak of the cholera epidemic in Haiti, is being investigated formally by the Agency, but too late. This has led to an explosion of anger on the part of Haitians, who took to the streets with demonstrations and blockades of roads throughout the week.
The cholera epidemic in Haiti is further evidence that the peoples of the world suffering of poverty, natural disasters, imperialist wars and massive immigration due to the imperialist aggression and barbarism, also suffer the condemnation of insecurity, uncertainty and misery due to lack of protection measures against epidemics and other preventable diseases.
The World Federation of Trade Union reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Haiti, who are suffering the deadly epidemic that is affecting the country after the devastation caused by the earthquake last January that killed thousands of people.
We closely follow all developments in the area and once again express our full solidarity with the working class in Haiti and hope they can find the strength to overcome this tragedy.
We demand the UN and the international community to help immediately with action to relieve the suffering of the people of Haiti.
En sólo 48 horas, 89 personas en Haití ha fallecido a causa de la epidemia de cólera que estalló el 20 de octubre. El número de víctimas mortales que ya ha causado esta epidemia es de 1275, según cifras del Ministerio de Salud.
En la capital, Porto Prince, donde están la mayoría de las víctimas del terremoto del 12 de enero, las condiciones sanitarias son inexistentes y la cifra de muertes se incrementa constantemente.Las acusaciones de que las fuerzas de paz de las Naciones Unidas y en particular el último envío llegó a Haití en octubre después de un brote de cólera en Nepal durante el verano, son responsables del estallido de la epidemia de cólera en Haití, está siendo investigado formalmente por la Agencia, pero demasiado tarde. La Federación Sindical Mundial reafirma su solidaridad con el pueblo de Haiti por la mortífera epidemia que está afectando el país y tras la devastación causada por el terremoto del pasado enero que causó la muerte a miles de personas.
Seguimos de cerca todos los acontecimientos en la zona y una vez más, expresamos nuestra plena solidaridad con la clase obrera de Haiti y esperamos que puedan encontrar la fuerza para superar esta tragedia.Exigimos que la ONU y la comunidad internacional ayuden de inmediato y con acción para aliviar el sufrimiento del pueblo de Haiti.
