Hi,

Since wfsindia.in is taken, we need to quickly decide on a name. Both wfs-india.org and wfsindia.org are available. Does any of them sound good with you? And which one?

And we need a logo for our group. There are 2 ways we can go about it -

1. make it ourselves - Mani, if I remember it correctly, did you volunteer for this?
2. hold a competition for it.

Please share your views,

Satabdi

wfs-india.org booked for one year.
Let's get going on the site now.

I think wfs-india.org is better because it doesn't have "sin" in it :-)
and I think it's fine for Mani to make a logo. Logo competitions are
usually more trouble than they are worth.

My two paisas. :-)

now we need to find hosting. kaustavdm has suggested linode but that is expensive ($20/month).
should we go for shared hosting somewhere?
net4.in is giving basic shared hosting with 500MB space at 30rupees/month.
bigrock.in is giving unlimited space at 149rupees/month.
learned people please decide well and we'll go for something in the next few days.

Clarification. I had initially suggested a shared hosting provider, but
had seconded Tarashish's suggestion of linode, provided wfs-india has
enough funds. I had suggested Bigrock's plan as well, but if we want to
build the new site in Drupal7, it is better to have a chat with Bigrock
and see if what are the limits they impose on the shared hosting in
terms of:

a. MySQL usage: number of queries/minute OR number of simultaneous queries

b. Maximum allowed PHP memory limit

c. Availability of PHP extensions: PDO_MYSQL, php-mcrypt are required

Thanks.

The demo site for current source of IGLUG-Cal is

If you want to fiddle around, use "test" as id and password to log in.

For wfs-site my recommendations on themes:

https://drupal.org/project/mayo : (color: pink)

https://drupal.org/project/redsalute (was done by zyxware)

https://drupal.org/project/pixture_reloaded (color: red ) is very adaptable

(also depends on what we finally decide for glug-cal... we may keep
current test one with few adjustments)

I think we should have a page for ideas - yesterday we came up with quite a few ideas which we might not be able to implement on our 15 June event, but we can vote on them and plan to do them in future.

Something on the lines of - http://funnel.hasgeek.com

Kaustav, will this be possible?

Also, will it be possible for us to have a page-wide look in Drupal?

It will be. There are some readymade idea management solutions for
Drupal, but they are not quite steady. Best thing to do is to create a
custom content type and use the Rate <http://drupal.org/project/rate>
module for voting.

Each "idea" should have a title, description, vote up/down option and
place for people to put in their comments, right?

What is a page-wide look?

Also, as per our discussion yesterday, you will need to forward the
present domain's nameservers to webfaction so that I can install the
site and a new mailing list there.

Yep.

What is a page-wide look?

Single column like hasgeek or spreading the entire width - http://wiki.ubuntu-women.org/

Single column is possible by removing the sidebar blocks. In that case
the content column will stretch to take up the available area.

Entire screen width (fluid width) is not possible with the present
theme. The present one uses fixed widths for different screen sizes. If
we need a fluid width, like Ubuntu Women wiki, we will need to use/write
a different theme.

If we move the links on the left column (login etc, Jobs etc.) to the top and make them horizontal, will that involve too much of effort?

Do you mean move sidebar menu links to the top menu? There may be too
many entries for that. But it is not an issue. It is a simple task from
the Drupal backend.

Don't drop it right now. I'm adding styles for multiple screen sizes,
which should stretch the layout based on various screen sizes. Give me
10 minutes for that. I'm working on it at the present. There is already
an issue on the GH issue tracker about fitting various screen sizes.

Tarashish, Openshift has a specific API which you will need to use to
code your site. However, if your site/application is coded to work with
openshift, it cannot be used in other hosts without a large change in
the code.

I am not experienced with Openshift though. If there are other
developers here willing to port the present code to Openshift, I'll be
glad to assist and learn in the process.

Ok. Changing the code for just a specific platform would be totally unnecessary. And also, we probably don't have any other php developer here.

I've installed the glugcal source at http://www.wfs-india.org. Please
suggest:

1. colours: top-border, link, site name

2. content: layout for homepage, or, text for "Who we are?" block on
homepage and the "About" page. For all other pages.

3. menu items: top level items.

4. user registration: will it be admin-moderated?

Innerpages are single column as Satabdi had asked. Also, I have added
styles for larger screen sizes. So, the theme will stretch for 1600px
and above as well.

I've requested webfaction support to install a mailing list at
wfs-indi...@wfs-india.org. I've give Satabdi's email address as
the admin for the list. If everything goes smoothly, the list should be
installed by tomorrow.

Satabdi, Mani, please send me a list of users to add as moderators. Best
is to register on the site on your own and send me the id's to assign
proper roles.

Waiting for loads of feedback.

Hey Kaustav,

The site looks really good. We just need to reduce a bit of clutter and introduce some elegance by hiding unnecessary links, IMO. And we need to start creating content. What is the way to customise the look -- through some control panel or by hacking on the tpl.php. Please guide us so other devels apart from you can try out changes.

colors: pink is fine, but some feminists also criticise this stereotyping

menu items: one menu on the top is enough. Items for now can be Home | Wiki | Resources | Events | About us. Later on we can introduce Jobs Forums when we start them.

also we can hide the poll now and bring it up when the site is complete, maybe in a few weeks.

Debamitro

Kaustav,

Great work!! And the site does look good being "page-wide"! :D

 1. colours: top-border, link, site name

Can we change the colour pink? It reinforces the gender stereotyping of associating women with pink and I think we should steer clear of such stereotyping.
When the logo is ready we can match the colour of the logo. What say?

 2. content: layout for homepage, or, text for "Who we are?" block on homepage and the "About" page. For all other pages.

The present "Who are we" is okay. Did you make it?

I really like the way Mailing List comes in a box. But the things on right of the mailing list and below "who are we" seem a little cluttered. To experiment, can we shrink the width of the left most column and see how it looks?

e.g. the options under the poll are coming on the right - I would like it to be left-aligned -just like the heading Poll.

Since the Forums link is already on the top, can we remove it from the left column?

Few thoughts:

1. Should we have a news flash section or an Events calendar or both? We can publicize events, conferences, hackfests etc in FOSS world

Then there will be events organized by us - which we would like to highlight in our website.

2. If we can make something like http://jobs.hasgeek.com/ for the jobs section - where only FOSS related opportunities will be publicized - it will remove one responsibility from our shoulder - we can then only moderate the entries posted by various organizations.
In the jobs section we can also include - internship opportunities like GSoC and OPW.

Thanks :-) We definitely need to reduce clutter on the home page. That
is the reason I had asked if anyone can come up with a sketch of what
can be put on the homepage.

I've kept things simple for non-technical users. The home page is
designed using Panels. It does not use any custom tpl.php layout.
However, if we have a clear design idea of the homepage content, I'll
create a tpl.php for the homepage. It will be faster, more efficient and
easier to manager (for me).

There is a installation guide in the repo. However, the
configuration-to-code export is not complete. e.g. it does not export
block settings, theme settings and certain input method settings.
Otherwise, using the installation instruction, a developer can easily
make a local install, hack on templates and send me a PR.

The present theme is a subtheme of skeletontheme. I've overriden just
the parts I needed (e.g. footer) and extended the layout to stretch on
higher screen resolutions, and work better on lower resolutions.

The theme uses Drupal's "color" module to generate top border, heading
and text colours. There is some issue with hyperlink colours being
overriden by theme's CSS. I'll look into it.

>

I was not in favour of pink either because of the same steriotyping you
have mentioned. I have put it their based on Mani's initial suggestions.
It can be changed easily from the admin.

Okay. I'll add "Articles" to it as Mani had suggested.

Consider every content there to be placeholders. I would like to
redesign the homepage to suit the needs of WFS-India. Can you please
suggest a layout?

Yes please. The theme's base colours are neutral enough. I'll adjust
top-border, heading and font colours according to the logo. In the

Keep both. News flash would be where you post some important news about
WFS-india. Event may be something which WFS-IN or some other
organization hosts. Do you mean publishing feeds from other sites?

I can pipe feeds from other sites into a section called "Jobs". At the
present, Jobs needs manual input.

Thanks.

Blue is too common web color for blue screen of death  :)

I am attaching a png of the many logo experiments. (I intend to bend it).

I also have a very complex formal version of the 2nd tif metal logo that I made for the Indian rough set society

+1 for the BSOD comparison :-D

> I am attaching a png of the many logo experiments. (I intend to bend it).

We would need a logo with a transparent background that works well on a
light coloured background. Current theme's body background colour (as
well as header background colour) is white (#FFFFFF).

Maybe we can play with the typography and emphasize the letter "W". "W"
can be shaped like freedom. But the representation of freedom needs to
be in some interesting way, rather than the very familiar "V" shaped
ones, e.g. not like the ones you see on some common emergency
contraceptive brands.

Can you try something which does not have a solid rectangular
background, and uses either full white or a transparent background?

Thanks.

Fine.

I will try transparent with custom fonts and limited effects on the
font/font effects with/wo shadow on fonts

Abbr : WFS ~ IN

and based on that I will adjust colors again.

Images will make the website less formal, so I am avoiding them
...though I have great CCSA ones from deviant art.

Please use some nice typography if you don't want to use any
animations/vectors. I had thought the logo to be more of a
drawing/vector like thing which we can use along with the text header.
Otherwise, if the logo itself has the WFS-India name on it, we will not
need the header any more.

Just a though about being formal. We need the site to be somewhat
attractive as well. Given that it has a pretty drab theme, having a
jolly logo would help newcomers. Making it too formal might scare away
newbies, who might think the group to be too geeky.

Since Mani is already working hard on the logo here, is there anyone
else here to assist Mani on this? I am afraid my design skills are
rather limited to software architecture design :-)

It will help if the 'slogan' field font is made similar to header.
OR relative size of header font should be reduced so that the whole
name does not split across two lines.

Logo part with images is no issue. But I will take my time.

I am not making any new header as that would be interfering with the theme.

Sorry, am not going to be of much help here apart from commenting on the logo. :p

I would go for making the logo beautiful - something very nice to look at - something simple and elegant (I think I use these 2 words very often). Although I am not a fan of Mac, but I really appreciate their sense of aesthetics.

Shweta,

The first version looks nice. Can you do these changes and see how it looks?

- Use the Open Sans Light font
(http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/open-sans)
- Make the logo colours match red and black?

Thanks.

Good work Shweta! I hope you have the face and the text on different
layers? Can you try interchanging the colours between the face and the
text? So the text becomes black, and face gets different shades of red.
Use similar red that you have used for text.

Originally the idea was to keep only an abbreviation of the name in the
logo. However, since you have included the full name in the logo, can
you make the logo text 2 points larger?

Also, is it possible to do something with the logo that gives a hint of
technology and progressiveness? Playing with typography is an option.
e.g. See this logo:

I was almost decided on
$\Huge{\mathbf{\mathcal{WFS_{IN}}} }$ to eps to xcf
with the attached great image
+ a set of transforms on the result

I think we should use Shweta's new version.

I like the shades :-) Also, why not keep the WFS-India text in a
consistent colour? Can you share the XCF?

Also, a small "integration" idea: Why not make the end of neck touch the
dot on the lower case "i" in "India"? That way, the logo gets more
compact, and you have a link between the face and the text.

I have asked Shweta for the xcf of the grey + red version.
Mine was made via her png to xcf to jpeg. So some info was lost.

I really like the way Mailing List comes in a box. But the things on
right of the mailing list and below "who are we" seem a little cluttered.
To experiment, can we shrink the width of the left most column and see
how it looks?

Yes we can. But shall we keep all the content that I have put on the home page presently?

It would be good if we can put less things but the most important things in the home page. Here are my thoughts -

1. Since we do not have any resources, can we remove it?
2. I think it would look really nice if we can reduce the no. of links on top horizontal menu. Can we keep a footer - and a menu bar in there to contain all the other links. Does this sound bad?

Few thoughts:

1. Should we have a news flash section or an Events calendar or both? We
can publicize events, conferences, hackfests etc in FOSS world

Keep both. News flash would be where you post some important news about WFS-india. Event may be something which WFS-IN or some other organization hosts. Do you mean publishing feeds from other sites?

For now, we are only publicizing our events - which can be covered in the events section. And the upcoming events can be displayed in the middle column. Could you please share what kind of news can be shared through Newsflash.

An events calendar will contain all the FOSS events that we come to know of. It will display the hackfests, hackathons, conferences, workshops in FOSS and will also include the events organized by us.

May be we can have something like this - http://adainitiative.org/what-we-do/event-calendar/

Lets discuss about it on the irc channel.

2. If we can make something like http://jobs.hasgeek.com/ [1] for the

jobs section - where only FOSS related opportunities will be publicized -
it will remove one responsibility from our shoulder - we can then only
moderate the entries posted by various organizations.
In the jobs section we can also include - internship opportunities like
GSoC and OPW.

I can pipe feeds from other sites into a section called "Jobs". At the present, Jobs needs manual input.

Should we term it FOSS jobs/ FOSS opportunities?

My idea of a NewsFlash was more like "news" from WFS-India, that is
neither a event nor a casual writing. e.g. members of WFS-India getting
selected for GSoc can be a "news". "NewsFlash" is just a flashy name for
it. :-)

A calendar layout can make things look very empty if you don't have many
events. So I would suggest you keep the Events page a blog-like view
similar to other categories for now. Later on, we can do a calendar.

Our events go to News Flash

We will be having reports of events of WFS and other organizations
possibly in FOSS News

Events of other organizations go to FOSS News/News flash.

While say reports on activities like gsoc go to FOSS News
Articles, tutorials go to articles

It suffices if menu items correspond to sufficient description (they
can populated later).

I will look into some aspects and add forms etc soon
