Ubuntu has evil editions for religions because all religions are evil.

Why don't we initiate a good edition like Ubuntu-Feminisms Edition?

It can prove useful in getting more women in and for other goals that
I have mentioned in earlier mails to this list.

I can outline quite a bit of the specs for additional customizations

One important task can be 'correctly mining reddit.com' to generate a
static information block for local processing.

Privacy is one aspect we must pay more attention to.

I believe these must have been discussed before,... where?

(that is some work)

"Name Question"

There are many varieties of feminism and so the term is vague. By
default we understand feminism = a weak leftist version. I prefer left
feminisms over weaker variants. There other versions like <some
religion>-feminism and rad feminism ... these promote hate.

Maybe we can stick to 'Ubuntu-Women Edition'. But various reasons in
either direction are possible.

In India, an overwhelming majority of women are brainwashed by the
patriarchy continuously from cradle to death (there are books on this
phenomenon). So quality of life, motivation, ability to reason and
productivity are badly affected. A somewhat bolder name might help in
initiating reasoning.

In US, the christian lobby has a strong hold over the education
sector. These fascists can interfere if they see labels like
'feminism'. Children of christian/religious parents may also be
interfered with adoption of such distros. Parts of Europe are far
better.

There are a number of subreddits at reddit.com that function as

A. Discussion forum for issues relating to the topic.
B. Help forums: real-life problems get solved here.

Search, Tags etc are already very mature at reddit (see their documentation).

Some useful reddits/subreddits: Feminisms, Atheism, LGBT,
SkinCareAddiction, AskTransgender, 2X chromosomes, Linux, GNU,
Foodporn. Tonightsdinner,...

Messy forums : Math, Philosophy,

Other Sites:

Basically we

1. Get data in nice form (easy) and review content (optional).

2. Develop a desktop application that functions as an interface
between user and this data.
Integrate with desktop.
User should be able to ask for context help or state problem.

3. Add an interface for web search via 'Duck Duck go' (not google etc)

4. By default application will be on some side of the screen in sticky mode.

5. By default application will use fuzzy search methods.

Search engines are intrusive and not effective for various real-life
problems even at the cost of privacy.
Internet access is not an option for large sections of the population.
So the application makes sense.

I like your idea. Any estimate of how mnay man-days needed. We can have it as an ongoing project. But before all these, lets debate and discuss over the efficacy of this idea. We may like this idea, but will it be popular among women?

It will turn out to be very popular mainly because

1. real-life problems get directly addressed and the content involves
discussion and provides new insights.
Knowledge is Q & A format
2. participation in many of the subreddits is ~5 million
3. Daily/hourly activity is extremely high in most of our target
channels. News-channels witness the maximum activity, but we will not
consider those (6000+ people may rate single posts there).
4. There are about 9 well moderated feminism related channels ... from
simple to ones for more involved discussions.
5. Relationship, career related issues are addressed with great
efficiency in respective sub-reddits. Even I help people there and
knowledge is accessible to a wide class of women ( including
teenagers).
6. Makeup. cooking and health related sub-reddits are trivially
popular and the knowledge base is good. Health problems (~20
subreddits) are extremely popular :) . Doctors can never find enough
time for patients due to the load and importance of patient's
knowledge is recognized by people.
7. Searching reddit through google will be biased and too difficult
because tags cannot be figured out auto-magically and anyway would be
cumbersome with many hit and miss instances. If user finds 20 results,
then would they be really manageable from a browser? Other search
engines do not perform better.
8. There are a few India related sub-reddits too.
9. Women with very good broadband access will find it helpful because
of #7 and irrespective of their personal preferences ...they will be
interested in at least some of the sub-reddits. Others without network
access may find it to be the only source of useful customized
information. There are no FF/chrome plugins that can handle Reddit
efficiently.

Number of person days:

1. Specification requires more effort (it makes sense to figure out
better strategies/techniques of information access and presentation
and make decisions on content)
2. I think the integration, development of UI and development of
search can be done in stages.
3. But a basic version should be ready in < 3 months (assuming 2 - 3
developers) since all of the required libraries are available.
