Well, here we go :-)

The corresponding Wiki page for the RHOK effort is:

http://www.wiki.rhok.org/index.php?title=Vulnerability_and_Mapping_field_survey_tool_rework&action=submit

Todos on my part:

a) establish a code repository... (probably Github)

b) flesh out a block diagram and overall CONOPS from George Muammar,
and post it to the RHOK wiki

So far, I am learning more about this tool interactively with George
on shared desktop sessions during my WiFi-enabled bus ride to work,
generally between 8:15 - 9:15 AM PST. George has been fantastic in
his patience and overall stock of knowledge in both GIS and "reality
checks" about what it's really like to have 100+ PDAs out in the field
in Africa collecting data in various languages in cooperation with
various governments for various crisis.

It should also be mentioned we hope to team up with the World Bank
Living Standards Measurement Survey group, as per:

http://web.worldbank.org/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/NEWS/0,,contentMDK:22398476~pagePK:34370~piPK:34424~theSitePK:4607,00.html

Regarding technology, the current system is an intriguing combination
of Access, VBA, and Java. Frontline SMS is in there as well. (My first
reaction was the same ..)

But the more I dig, the more I appreciate the tradeoffs...

So, I am currently looking at JGoodies Forms, Validation, and
https://abeille.dev.java.net/ , SQLlite, and how to perhaps
autogenerate J2ME and message parsing for Frontline .

*lots* to discuss/do ... but well worth some serious up-front
design/"spirited discussion"...I mean, what could be more important to
decision-makers than reliable field data?
