a good conversation with Christiaan of Google this morning, who
pointed me at the 'Open Data Kit", as per:

http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/

and conversation with CartONG revealed their effort, using
"EpiDefender" forms, as per:

And MobiFORMS, as per: http://www.mobiforms.com/ (will upload their
PDF doc) .

I know of the Google Open Data Kit, I have been in contact with them for a while.
We were in contact with EPI Defender when our project started. If I remember correctly it was running on Symbian at the time. Now it is for Android.

Our problem is that we are using more than 1000 windows mobile PDAs and we do not want to throw them away and get androids. The request from my users is to move to tablets and laptops because our questionnaires are so incredibly complex it is hard to follow on a small screen.

Mobiforms looks good, but needs gps support

We are stuck in a loop at the moment, continuing to buy the windows mobile 5 remaining in stock because our software works fine.

I think that once all WFP assessments will be performed on PDAs we will probably have about 5000 units. We are well on the road to that, and actually in any given moment there are probably 2-3 assessments with tens of PDAs being used in the field. It is impossible to tell everyone to stop and throw away what they have to start with a new technology.

agreed.

I am investigating where XForms and the validation piece of ODK ends,
and Android begins... the main differences seems to be the richness
of the GUI, GPS and photo capture classes available on Android, versus
a relatively 'raw' NMEA string of GPS info over a bluetooth virtual
COM port...and ..?? for photo/audio/video capture....

Also, just for diligence, and realizing it is less than optimal, is it
worth investigating running Android on the PDAs.....? is there a
standard hardware ?

I must say I was a skeptic of the Access piece of the current WFP
methodology in the beginning, but have come to appreciate it in the
process of investigating viable alternatives.

but gotta also say the ODK, XForm, and Java/ROSA communities seems to
be quite healthy/thriving...
