Neighborhood awareness results in arrest in residential burglary series

Bellingham (WA) Bellingham resident David D. Roth 7/25/1986 was booked into Whatcom County Jail at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday September 30. He was positively identified by a witness that saw him at a residence in the 1200 block of Yew Street. The neighbor did not recognize Roth’s car, a cream colored Mitsubishi Diamante, and called 911. Officers arrived at the residence and found fresh pry marks on the back door. Within a short period of time another responding officer spotted Roth driving the Diamante and stopped him. The officer noted that Roth had a police scanner in the center console of his car. A search of the car, conducted at a later time as the result of a search warrant, located a pry bar. The witness that had called 911 positively identified Roth as the man that had been at the victimized house. Roth was not successful in making entry into this home and is being
charged with Residential Burglary – Attempted.
This crime spree of daytime residential burglaries was highly publicized by local news sources as well as the Facebook and Twitter sites maintained by the Bellingham Police. Flooding our community with specific information about when, and how, the burglaries were being committed led to a high volume of tips. Well over three dozen individual bits of information were provided through our tip line, e-mail system and Facebook messaging. We specifically cautioned our neighborhoods to be on alert and for residents to talk to their neighbors to be watchful for one another. This is exactly what happened on Yew Street and it resulted in one of our daytime burglars being captured.
Bellingham Police officers and detectives have developed additional information that Roth is not the only person involved in this burglary series. We have located and impounded the green Ford Explorer that was seen at more than one victim residence. A significant amount of stolen property has been recovered and our Evidence and Identification Unit is sorting through these items to verify ownership. We are confident that at least one additional person will be arrested for his participation in this burglary series.
