Can the stall count go negative?

scenario: an offensive player makes a catch, his marker bumps him as
he starts announcing 'stalling', the offensive player calls
'contact'.

does the player subtract 2 seconds from their stall count? which would
bring them to minus 1 i think?

Is there an assumed floor at zero? after all he could restart a new
stall count rather than continue with the previous one.

or is it the contact marking infraction not appropriate for what is
possibly more of a receiving foul? The sort of contact i'm thinking
of would often happen before the start of the stall count, i guess. If
it is associated with the momentum of the players after the catch.

so I think i have 2 questions...can the stall count become less than
zero...for any marking infraction. And is 'contact' an appropriate
infraction to call for contact related to a defender slowing down more
slowly then an offender who has just made a catch.

cheers,

It is not sensible for the stall count to go negative. We could add that
as an interpretation.

Contact is an appropriate call for anyone who is a legitimate thrower.
Calling it early in the count may not give you more time, but will force a
reset to the count if there is a further infraction.
