As mentioned at the officers meeting, we’re in a unique situation that I don’t know if any other fire company has realized yet:
The issue:
Motorola has stopped producing pagers that operate on our Fire Dispatch frequency (500.8125). We are in what’s called T-Band and the new Minitor 7 pagers do not support it. After speaking with Motorola, they confirmed there is no plan to expand their pagers into T-band and no way to order more Minitor 6 pagers that support it. They have indicated that many departments are transitioning to issuing portable radios with pager functionality built-in.
Solutions:
The only solution that I’ve found to be a viable option without moving towards issuing portable radios (God help us if every firefighter in Wayne can talk on-air) is the
Unication G1. I’ve attached a quote from our regional vendor for (10x) G1 pagers with programming labor.
My recommendation:
With the quantity of new members coming in, the rapid decline of our Minitor 5 inventory, and no additional Minitor 6 pagers in-house, I’d like to buy 10x Unication G1 units to exceed the current inventory need and maintain an excess stock in anticipation of future equipment failure. An alternate option would be to order less, but unless we know we’ll be able to order 3-5 of these annually and have access to the money in a dependable timeline, I think utilizing the bonded money for an excess of inventory would be beneficial.
Radios
On the radio side, I’m not completely familiar with what we’ll need additionally once we’ve been issued the new radios. I assume we’ll be properly outfitted, but would like to review some data and inventory quantities on that regard.
Please let me know your thoughts on this as well as any other radio needs we should consider.
