Hi everyone. I need some tried and tested techniques or products to
remove hard water spots stuck on the windshield that is not removable
by regular washing. I have 2 cars on my experiment list, 1 is a 1-year-
old Honda Civic, another is a 15-year-old Nissan Sunny 130Y/B11. I
have tried the following but didn't seem to work:

1) ArmorAll glass cleaner
2) white vinegar diluted 1:1 with distilled water
3) Soft99 Glass Compound Z

Can anyone recommend best practice?

I have tried the vinegar a few times on different cars, but the
results not very good for me. I need something more aggressive. Can
anyone recommend?

I have tried the DIY Rainaway watermark remover and it works! You can
get it from the Lowyat forum - http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f=11&t=851077
More readup can be done at Fishbonez's site -

Hi Joey,

I'll reply according to the things you have tried.

1) ArmorAll glass cleaner - If it's just like your average glass
cleaner, it wouldn't remove etched in waterspots.
It will only remove dirt ON the glass, not IN the glass.

2) White vinegar, the purpose of using vinegar is because of its
acidity. I don't know why but most liquid un-abrasive watermark
removers are acid(such as Stain-X from Osren as suggested by puden).
Something to do with acid dissolving the minerals in the waterspots?
If vinegar doesn't work, trying something stronger, such as Meguiar's
Wheel Brightener or any acid based wheel cleaner. Careful not to use
acid on the front windscreen and side mirrors as it will haze them.

3) Soft99 Glass Z Compound, this stuff needs to be put to work to
really work. What is your method of application? If you have a sanding
backing pad or any stiff and firm block, wrap it with a terry cloth,
apply some compound, mist the glass with water and work it in back and
forth motions. If not, use a random orbital. The abrasive route will
take more effort than the acid route, but can be used on all
windscreens and side mirrors.

Hope that helps!
