Fight for anything and everything. When will this end?

Had to go to press and media to cast my vote.

After 3 hrs of loud campaign with media got a call from the returning officer saying facilities are made for you. Went there to see an inaccessible approach to ramp and an inaccessible ramp itself.

There were instances where wheelchair users were physically lifted into the polling booths.

Friends with visual impairment had their issues. They did not get the brail ballot paper. They were not given enough time to cast their votes. They were forced to cast vote without knowing the required information.

Could not see any sign language interpreter in my polling booths either.

Dear Rajiv,

RTher than getting dejected and angry, I think it is more realistic to
have a planned campaign by DRA soon after the elections are over to
systematically try to ensure that the next elections are accessible.

Dear All,
Its really disheartening and annoying to have deprived of my
independence in exercising my franchise in the polling booth. they
didnt provide me with the braille ballot and no proper response was
given when questioned. also, the presiding officer with a sense of
helplessness and duty-bound read me out the printed ballot sheet
as Sunder sir said, we must start a proper and systematic campaign to
ensure an accessible and fair environment for the disabled at least in
the next elections

I am repeating my earlier post.
Lets clarify once and for all-There is no ballot paper. This is electronic
voting.
We get a list of candidates in Braille. This helps us check the serial
number of the candidate we want to elect. You can get this information from
the Election Commission Website. This is fairly accessible.
The evms are labelled with Braille.
Ramps are a nightmare.

yes, i agree, and i mistakenly mentioned as Ballot sheet. its the list
of canditates in braille was not given and was not allowed to feel the
braille lables on the machine to exercise my rights

GOING BY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES AND THOSE VOICED BY RAJIV AND OTHERS...

MY OBSERVATION IS THAT THERE IS ABSOLUTE LACK OF AWARENESS OF THE NEED FOR ACCESSIBLE POLLING BOOTHS.. ALSO THE FACT 'THAT PEOPLE DO NOT REALISE THAT THIS IS ESSENTIAL' IN THE FACE OF NOT JUST DISBAILITY THRU CIRCUSTANCES, BUT ALSO AGEING...

MY FATHER IS A 79 YEAR OLD MAN.. WITH A HEART PROBLEM AND HAS A MOBILITY ISSUE... HE  IS NOT A WHEELCHAIR USER BUT STILL HAS GREAT DIFFICULTY IN CLIMBING STEPS ETC.... I AM YET TO KNOW HOW HE WAS ABLE TO VOTE.....

HE HIMSELF DOES NOT REALISE THAT 'THERE SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE POLLING BOOTHS' AND 'THAT IT CAN BE DONE...'

WHERE I VOTED IN MYLAPORE AT LADY SIVASWAMY SCHOOL, I DID NOT SEE A RAMP....

THE PROBLEM IS EXEMPLIFIED  BY THE PERCEPTION THAT SINCE PWD'S ARE A MINORITY  IN DIFFERENT BOOTHS.. IT IS A WASTE OF TIME MOMEY AND EFFORT...

WE NEED TO ADDRESS THESE MISCONCEPTIONS, GIVE EXAMPLES OF ACCESSIBLE POLLING BOOTHS IN OTHER COUNTRIES  WITH OUR OWN 

MERELY POINTING OUT OUR PROBLEMS WILL NOT HELP....

MAY BE A MODEL OF AN ACCESSIBLE BOOTH, ACCESSIBLE VOTING SPACES  ETC.. WILL HELP.. PUBLICISING IN THE MEDIA..

Dear All,

I am appalled at ignorance of such kind amongst educated classes of our friends. We have long ago passed an age of paper ballot and are now in the age of electronic ballot. I am happy that years ago I had suggested to Honourable High Court in Mumbai that a list of candidates with serial numbers as they would appear on EVM should be made available in Braille and Hon. Justice Chandrachood had kindly passed an order to that effect. I was given that kind of list yesterday and I could cast my ballot independently. I totally agree that there was no ramp where my centre was placed on the ground floor and that still needs to be advocated strongly.

There is no ballot paper whether in Braille or print. So please let us not haggle about this one.
