Down jackets were the height of fashion back then, so that was what I wanted. An Expedition Down Jacket and beak shoes were all the rage. It was expensive back then, but I treated it like an investment.
Denim knows how to make it self onto the runway and is definitely always a trend fabric for every season. Recently, denim jackets are seen more on street style bloggers and also by those who are trendsetting designers such as, Philip Lim and Marc Jacobs, who are the ones that brought denim pieces onto the runway. They made the classic piece more fun by adding retro patches.
You can buy one off the rack, but personally I suggest using an old jacket you already have in your closet to save money and the environment, plus the older the jacket looks, the cooler the effect is. Wash it lightly so that the patches can stand out more on your denim jacket and will stick to your jacket better.

I used a cropped denim jacket from K-Mart that I got on clearance, as I had no access to op/thrift shops or other retail clothing shops during lockdown. Whatever jacket or coat you have on hand should work, although it is easier to work with thinner denim.
Because you may get glue residue from the rescue tape onto the needle as it passes through the patch, in addition to bending or warping on thicker fabrics, you may choose to buy a set of needles just for this project. Likewise, cutting the tape with a second pair of household scissors prevents gunking up your good sewing and embroidery scissors.
My first step is to take my jacket and play around with layout. As much as sewing on a large number of patches feels daunting, this provides greater options in terms of spacing and placement. If you want a jacket that appears more intentional in design, I recommend saving up patches to sew on together rather than sewing each patch on immediately after making it.
The many seams on the front of a denim jacket form a convenient grid structure onto which one can align patches. Start by aligning patches along the bottom hem, the button plackets and the centre flat felled seams. The side seams and the flat felled seams above the pockets offer further places to align square and rectangular patches. I then filled in the gaps around these patches by roughly aligning new patches to the others. This is useful for heart patches and other non-square designs.
Choosing what thread or floss you use to attach your patches will depend on what you prioritise: neatness on the inside of your garment, neatness on the outside of your garment, or ease of sewing experience.

Sewing on patches can be very time consuming, and trying to push a needle through stiff patch fabric can really hurt your fingers. But if you want your patch denim jacket to last the test of time, sewing is your best option.
What a cool idea and what fun!! It reminds me of my childhood skiing in New Hampshire with patches of the mountains we skied. Sewed up and down both sleeves of our parkas by my mum. I would love to see those again. Going to look on eBay and etsy!

Our Farmstead Quilt Patch Jacket is inspired by vintage hunting competition jackets with patches representing farm stands and agricultural alliances on the Northeast Coast. Fitted with heavyweight antique silver fireman clasps, a corduroy collar, and lightly padded cotton to add warmth.
Each item in the collection embodies aspects of exploration and identity, beginning with carefully sourced fabrics gathered endearingly through our travels abroad across the Eastern world. These textiles, steeped in a sense of home and familiarity, portray uniquely found cultural patterns with muted florals and rich paisleys. The collection then extends to themes of recreation and vintage sportswear, exploring classic team jacket elements and patchwork that serve as symbols cherished by countless immigrants in the West as emblems of camaraderie and belonging.
The collection showcases and enriches our celebrated knitwear category with new arrivals such as double-breasted and multi-pocket cardigans, knit henleys, and the introduction of argyle patterns. Furthermore, the "Further Away" collection extends the bottoms range by introducing novel silhouettes in denim, workwear, and chore styles. Within this category, the collection is harmonized with new cargo pant designs, relaxed-fit jeans, and timeless pleated trousers. Hoodies and tees have undergone pigment dyeing, resulting in a gradual evolution of color and a unique patina over time, imbuing each piece with character and individuality. Rooted in contrasts and parallels, FOUND Spring/ Summer 2024 thrives on the artful balance of transition.
To hand sew a patch you will need a needle and thread. First, place the patch on the jacket where you want it to go and attach with pins to keep the patch stable. Next, do a basic running stitch around the edge of the patch. Here is a tutorial for a running stitch. If your Jacket and patch are thick you may need to pull the needle all the way through the back of the jacket and then pull it back through the front instead of the fluid motion used in the video (it will still be the same stitch). I recommend using a thimble - I forgot to and got quite the blister on my thumb (no fun!!).

The jacket is made from 80% virgin wool and 20% polyamide, a blend that offers both warmth and durability. Virgin wool, taken from a lamb's first shearing, is known for its fineness and softness, providing natural insulation as well as moisture resistance. For care, the jacket should be delicately hand-washed in cold water or machine washed on a gentle/wool cycle, cold, with a mild detergent like Woolite and minimal spin (600 rpm).
