Dear Neighbors:
Among the egregious mistakes in the current redistricting issues is one to remove Roosevelt Island from District 5 in Manhattan and plunk us into Queens District 26.  This will be debated by the Districting Commission as spelled out in the letter I've forwarded to you.  This is a profoundly bad idea for the reasons listed here.  Please make it your business to respond to them by email or, better yet, to testify at one of the August meetings.  Our quality of life will be impacted, and not for the better, should this change go through.  Thanks for your efforts,
    Matthew Katz

Keep Roosevelt Island Part of Manhattan

The Districting Commission is now working on rebalancing Council District populations based on the 2020 Census. The first iteration of the redistricting has Roosevelt Island moved into District 26 in western QueensRoosevelt Island is currently part of District 5 in Manhattan along with much of the Upper East Side.

We believe this to be capricious and without appropriate and due consideration. From its inception Roosevelt Island has been a part of Manhattan - to move any part of our Governance would be detrimental to our community.

There is one essential step and that is to testify to the commission in person or virtually (and submit alternative maps too if you have the time). When you testify, the commissioners are all sitting there and have to listen. The next hearings will be August 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th and 22nd from 4pm-7pmDetails are not available yet but will be found on the Commission’s website: Here

If you can’t testify in person, you canemail PublicT...@redistricting.nyc.gov  at any time.

Some talking points:

1. The original purposeful intent was that Roosevelt Island be always considered a part of Manhattan. Roosevelt Island was Created to be a Manhattan Utopian Community by Mayor Lindsay.
2. Roosevelt Islanders pay property taxes in Manhattan.
3. Roosevelt Island schools are in DOE District 2 in Manhattan.
4. Area code for Roosevelt Islanders was 212 not 718.
5. Zip Code for Roosevelt Island is 10044, a Manhattanzip code.
6. The MTA considers Roosevelt Island part of Manhattan.
7. Included as part of the flat rate taxi fare as Manhattan
8. Part of Manhattan Public Library System. Queens is separate Library system.

Most importantly, for over 50 years the people who live on Roosevelt Island identify themselves as Manhattanites.

Also for those who have purchased their apartments, Manhattan is a lot different then Queens, even LIC. Buyers will probably lose $$ on their investments no longer being on the UES, or in school district 2

Maybe the Management of all the buildings on RI should get behind this. I can’t really see the rationale of this redistricting.

Also, I would really hate to loose Rebecca Seawright and Julie Menin as our representatives!

Thank you for making everyone aware of this proposed change. It is crucial for our community to remain as Manhattan designation.

Good Morning,

This cannot be in the best interest of Roosevelt Island.  I hope this news gets out to all residents so more people have a chance to comment against this plan. This requires a community-wide coordinated effort.

Matthew, thank you, always for keeping us informed!
