Shortof that, the only way to get even close to what a bottle of "injector cleaner" states it will do, is to disconnect the fuel line to your engine, put the line into the injector cleaner, and have that stuff go straight to the injectors, as undiluted as possible.
I myself have used in-tank cleaners in the past and, whilst a physical inspection before and after showed absolutely no impact, there was definitely a placebo effect ("Oh, feels like its running better?").
You are better off buying a big bottle of a diesel fuel catalyst, a good one. Put on average 1ml per 5L each time you fill up.. I have a 2004 Vauxhall Vivaro turbo diesel and I have never had a fuel related problem and no black smoke.
It doesnt matter if you put the fuel injector cleaner in or after filling the tank, in fact, it doesnt matter if you use it at all.
Fuel injector cleaner will not and cannot clean injectors, what it can do is suspend dirt/moisture in the tank and deposit it in the filter.
Save yourself the money and dont use it, or alternatively just use snake oil
Personally, I use AFC-705, an american additive. I have used it in my vehicle, boat and on remote sites. I spent 18 months sailing around Asia and never once had a fuel issue. If you have ever seen what they call diesel up there, it was a miracle :)
The servo up there is a woman on a beach/small town standing next to a 44 gallon drum pumping it out by hand, who knows how many times it has been cut so they can make some $$ on it. I have also seen what comes out of the tanks here... same same.
I have done the injector cleaner every service on one of my cars, and the result was negligible if that on the end result, whereas an ultrasonic cleaner bought my injectors back to life in 30 minutes, and took overall an hour to remove, clean, flow-test and re-fit.
Note with a removed fuel injector clean, you also get clean and new micro-filters, new o-rings to better seal the injector, and you know for certain each injector is flowing correctly, and more importantly, flowing at the same rate as the other injectors.
Fuel injectors are susceptible to being partially clogged by debris in the fuel and or the tank. I do not know the age or how you maintain your car but I would try some good quality fuel injection cleaner first. A brand I use is by Flashlube and it is very concentrated. Lately I have found it hard to find but an Autobarn was my last purchase. I would not use a cheaper brand of cleaner (i did) as it may not be as effective.
If after a couple of tanks you find that it is not better you can always go and get your injectors cleaned. It will save you money if you can pull them out yourself and always replace the o-rings when re-installing.
Not long ago, my Honda Jazz (1.5 litre) was mis-firing during acceleration. This was intermittent, but no doubt annoying. A friend of mine suggested injector cleaner, and my immediate thought was 'snake oil'. Anyway, I did nothing for quite a few weeks and the problem persisted, but I was in K-Mart one day and I bought a $5 bottle of injector cleaner which I put into my petrol tank prior to the next fill. Since that day (over 1,000kms now), the car runs perfectly well. Whether it was the snake oil from K-Mart that did the trick or some mysterious divine intervention, I'll probably never know. If the car ever plays up again, I'll buy another bottle of snake oil.
Ha. Same here. Watched one of those pommy top gear type shows where they took an older car, & went through all the typical service items 1 by 1, dyno testing after each item was fitted/replaced, & the injector cleaner made the biggest difference. The dyno numbers showed it. They werent advertising a product, as I'm pretty sure that they never said which brand they used.
I'm still a skeptic, but chucked a bottle in the tank of my car as it had a light misfire at times. Seems to have worked. Still a skeptic though
In my case, I tried the cheapest I could get, which was $5 a bottle from K-Mart. Not expecting it to work at all, I was surprised at the 'before & after' difference, because in my case the car was running rough prior to the snake oil treatment and it ran smooth after the treatment. Like others have said, I'm also skeptical, even though I've had success with it.
Interesting....I run on V-power ever tank.
My mechanic put fuel injector cleaner regularly on services
Injectors needed replacing as was not starting with out turning over 6 times!
Replaced injectors all good!
So much for 98 RON
So much for injector cleaner!
