Very very sad. Senseless. Unfair. Andrew had so much more to contribute to this world.

The bicyclist killed in a crash with a UPS truck in Newton was mourned Tuesday as a respected professor and mentor to graduate students at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Alex Bohm, 57, of Newton, died at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he was taken for treatment of critical injuries suffered in the crash that occurred late Monday afternoon, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan and Newton Police Chief John Carmichael said in a joint statement.

Bohm was an associate professor of developmental, molecular, and chemical biology at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the university said in a statement posted to its website Tuesday.

Bohm, who is referred to as Andrew in the university’s statement, is survived by his wife Celia and their daughters.

“Dr. Bohm was a beacon of guidance and support for the postdoc community for the past five years,” the statement said.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m Monday, police received reports of a crash involving a cyclist and a vehicle at the intersection of Watertown and Bridge streets, where officers found a man who was critically injured, officials said.

An initial investigation suggests that the UPS truck was traveling east on Watertown Street and turning left onto Bridge Street, while Bohm was traveling west on Watertown Street, Ryan’s office said.

The driver of the UPS truck, a 57-year-old Newton man whose name was not released, stayed at the scene after the crash, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation by state and local police.

Tufts said Bohm was a generous colleague.

“From hosting coffee hours to kayaking on the Charles River, he built a community where postdocs felt valued, supported, and empowered to thrive both academically and personally. He served with an open mind, a generous heart, and a genuine dedication to the postdoc community and the university,” the statement said.

A gathering at the Tufts Boston Medical Campus was held on Tuesday in remembrance of Bohm. Dates for a memorial and vigil will be announced by the university, the statement said.

Students and faculty shared fond memories of Bohm on the university’s website.

“He was the kindest human and I’m so sorry to hear of his passing,” Rebecca Condruti, a PhD student in cell, molecular, and developmental biology said.

Andrew Plaut, a professor at the school of medicine, shared a memory of working on research with Bohm.

“That’s what universities are for: holding forth faculty with that unbeatable combination of knowledge, availability, and teaching generosity; Andrew Bohm in a nutshell,” Plaut said.
