[sorry for any cross-posts!]

Hi Friends and Neighbors,
Two timely things of interest:
-This Saturday Nov 1 (the day after Halloween) from 1-4p, is Newton's Pumpkin Smash at City Hall. It's unreasonably fun, and helps promote composting! Lotsa details below. If you want to volunteer to help out you can sign up here.

-If you have a heat pump, you can get a significant discount on your electric bill during the heating season. They think the average family can save about 20% on your bill. The 7.5cent/kwh discount is on the distribution side- so if you have an alternate supplier or are on a municipal aggregator (like Newton's) you still get the discount.

For Eversource customers, all you need to do is call/ check your bill to make certain your listed rate is "R3- Residential Heating". In theory if you had gotten a MassSaves rebate you should automatically be in that category- but I wasn't. The Eversource customer service line folks put it right (‭(800) 592-2000‬, I asked for a callback and it worked!).
Not sure about how to sign up with other suppliers.

You need to do this before Saturday Nov 1.

More info from Newton here.
Specific details in the FAQ from MassSaves here.

Looking forward,
miles

-- LONGER DESCRIPTION--

Green your Halloween at Newton's 6th annual Pumpkin Smash

November 1 from 1pm-4pm

Newton City Hall War Memorial Circle

1000 Commonwealth Ave.

Stop by to smash your pumpkin, touch-a-truck, donate unwanted candy or costumes, and grab a bite from a local food truck all while learning about managing your food waste and composting!

What will you do with your pumpkin after Halloween? You could put it in with your yard waste, but how much more fun would it be to smash it? You can fling, toss and crush your pumpkin in all sorts of ways, including with machines made by the Newton LigerBots, Newton’s high school robotics team.

This family friendly event takes our orange pumpkins and turns them “green.” All our pumpkins will be composted, thus reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions and creating a valuable amendment for our soils. Don't forget to remove any candles or decorations from your pumpkin and to bring any excess candy and costumes to be donated. Donated costumes will be available to take home at our pop-up costume swap.

It's going to be a smashing good time!

Pre-registration for the event is highly encouraged. On-site registration (and a longer line) is required if pre-registration is not completed.
