Dear neighbor:
As you may have heard, the city is working very hard to ensure compliance with our local recycling program. According to our recycling contract, the city is fined (on a monthly basis) if there is too much contamination in the recycling bins. In August, Newton was fined $6,120 for exceeding the allowable amount of contamination, and we have paid over $65,000 in fines this year.
1) Please remember to only place items in your Green bin if it is authorized recycling
2) The city will begin performing curbside inspections of bins on MONDAY, October 1 (see the attached letter)
[The inspections are not highly invasive, inspectors should NOT be rooting around through your bin and they will happen on 3 occasions. Inspections are designed to enhance the city's understanding of our recycling program providing us with better data upon which to make future decisions.]
3) I highly recommend downloading the Newton Recycling App, "Recycle Right". It's great!
Please visit this page if you have questions about what you may recycle.
If you have any questions about this, or any other city business - please feel free to contact me at jkrin...@newtonma.gov
Thank you very much,
Josh Krintzman
