Hi neighbors.
As a parent of a first grader at Horace Mann and another preschooler who will be starting there next year, Newton's schools are deeply important to me, as I know they are for many others in our community. Unfortunately, the teachers that make our schools great are facing increasing challenges in being able to live in, or even near, our city. Newton for Everyone will be hosting an educational event on September 30th discussing these challenges and what we can do about them.
Priced out: The growing challenge of teacher retention and housing costsTuesday, September 30 at 7pm
Scandinavian Living Center, 206 Waltham Street & live streaming on Zoom
Dramatic changes in the housing market have left many educators in an unwinnable race for one of our most basic needs: an affordable place to live. Many of our teachers have a long commute because they can’t find housing in Newton or nearby. How does the lack of available housing impact retention and recruitment of good teachers?
National Council on Teacher Quality President Heather Peske will share their recently released analysis of housing costs and teacher pay across the country, with implications for Newton's teachers and community.
I hope you'll consider attending our event, whether virtually or in person.
Also, if you are an educator, or know of one, who would be willing to share their experience with the housing shortage as part of our event, please reach out. We'd love to include teachers' experience in our program alongside Heather's analysis.
Best,
Luke
