Dear West Newton Peeps:


As you probably already know, automatic toll collection on the Masspike begins on Friday.  The gantries over the Pike, like the one in Newtonville near Lowell Ave, will collect tolls with EZPass transponders or by taking a photo of your license plate and sending you a bill. Vehicles without an EZZPass transponder will be charged more to cover billing and mailing costs.

Those Turnpike toll tickets are soon to be a thing of the past! If you don’t have an E-ZPass transponder yet, you’re running out of time.

According to the Boston Globe, MassDOT will continue to offer discounts to EZPass Massachusetts subscribers.

From all reports (and it was stated very clearly in an interview on WBUR with the DOT "Director of Tolling"):
- Mass EZ Pass holder pay the least
- then all non-Mass EZ Pass holders
- then people who don't use EZPass (they get a bill in the mail)

You can calculate current and future tolls for all travel distances for vehicles with in-state, out-of-state, and no EZ-pass at http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/highway/TollCalculator.aspx

If it is useful to you I calculated current and future fees for the exits I travel most frequently from West Newton:

For cars with in-state transponders it will now cost $.35 to go from West Newton to Newton corner.  West Newton to Cambridge, will go up from $1 to $1.35. To prudential from $1 to $1.70, and round trip to the airport from $5 to $6.40. 128 to Natick will go from $.30 to $.25.
