I too was sentimentally attached to the telephone number that my family had since 1970, but I was ready to get rid of it when Verizon stopped servicing copper wire and forced everyone in my part of Newton onto fiber, which meant I could no longer get DSL which was a better price than FIOS and plenty fast enough for me. I stayed with Verizon for most of the time that the price was the same, but got so fed up with their inability to direct debit my bank account while sending me statements that said "your bank account will be debited", and repeated broken promises that it would be fixed by the next statement, that I dumped them a few months early. I took a break from having internet and eventually switched to RCN for internet. I've never had cable -- too expensive. I get PBS 2 & 44, 4, 5, 60 (the new NBC home) over the air, with a vintage indoor rabbit ear antenna attached to my TV. I don't have time to watch much TV beyond Masterpiece, Mystery, and maybe Sunday morning talk shows if I'm home.
I don't miss the land line at all. It's so nice not to come home to the blinking light and junk phone messages from what I call the fake electric company, or vacation time shares or credit card/loan marketers. Though I'm actually sorry I don't get political polls and calls, which I always found interesting.
My sister and brother in law in Maine dropped cable land line and instead subscribe to both Amazon Prime and Netflix, so they don't actually get local television.
