Thank you, thank you and thank you for attending the 4th annual Service Raleigh event at the Wedge Garden. I got home Saturday afternoon, had a nice cup of chai from Blue Mango and then fell asleep for about 15 hours. When I woke up Sunday morning, I realized what had just happened. A community had come together for the common purpose -to grow a healthier neighborhood.
I spoke to a number of you on Saturday about reconnecting students, children and families to the natural environment through food, education and community engagement. We all agree. We want this garden to be more than a garden. We want it to be a learning center! Thank you for sharing your passion with me. The projects below help us build momentum in the spring to make a difference later in the year. We will be spending the next few weeks planting. If you have seeds or seedlings to share, feel free to bring them by on Saturday or reply to this email.
Below are the projects that were completed last Saturday with your help:
1) Removed all the debris and unwanted greenery from the garden – thank you Will Allen for providing your truck at the last minute and driving it back and forth from the burn site. Craig and Joe for getting the permit a few days earier. There are plenty of photos and videos of that process.
2) The bulletin board – Phase I & II. – Phase I consisted of 20+ hours by ACE staff at ACE Hardware to build this “beast” – Phase II was at the garden with Mike Cole, ACE Hardware, leading the project. We all agreed this is a community bulletin board and it needs to be in a visible place. Leah started a time-lapse video of this. Phase III of the bulletin board is on Thursday afternoon. The bulletin board was paid by the Pullen Park Neighborhood Association. Thank you Pullen Park residents.
3) Area behind the shed cleared out – We have been trying to get this done for a few years now. Thank you NCSU students for getting this done for us.
4) Planted flowers in the front – Mary Osborn with Dad and Dallas Ashe led a group to transform the front of the area. We received $60 from Sue Lohr to purchase lots of annuals that will bloom late spring and summer. The bricks look great! Thank you Dallas for the broccoli rabe and brussel sprouts. We'll be keeping a close eye on the Brussel sprouts as we have not had good luck with them in the past.
5) Prepared the beds for planting – Elle “Giorgina”, Anna Tsuie (NCSU) and Keith Willis led a team to prepare all beds for planting. They also planted lettuce and bok choi donated by Well Fed Community Garden.
6) Interviews – Leah Snyder (sister of Yates Snyder) and Courtney Bachman (intern from NCSU) interviewed a number of you. The video will be edited by Yates once again and we will share it with you before publishing it. Thank you in advance for your kind words.
7) Installed Sign Holders – Stephen Votino, owner of Century 21 Triangle Group and co-owner of Moonlight Pizza donated 18, much needed, sign holders. Now we can keep track of what is growing in each bed!
8) Potato Pen is ready – Keith Willis from Haven House prepped the soil in the potato pen. If you want to plant potatoes, come by the garden Thursday afternoon on Saturday at noon.
9) Pathways are clear – Mary Osborn took charge and led a group to lay out the wood chips. I can put Mary in charge of any project at the garden and she delivers!
10) Vermicompost bed is ready – Thank you Mary & Keith. Yates Snyder will be teaching kids about composting worms this month!
11) Raffle Prizes – Melody Owens did a great job manning the registration table. She also gave out the raffle prizes from:
a. Lomo Market
b. Sushi Blues
c. Zaky’s Mediterean Falafel
d. The Green Monkey
e. The Raleigh Wine Shop
f. P.G. Werth’s
g. Tesoro Hair Design
Attached is a list of those who attended the event. If your name is not on this list, please reply to this email. We need to add your name so that you can be included in our 2015 annual report. I enjoyed meeting your families and friends as well.
For the 2nd year, lunch was provided by Moonlight Pizza & Irregardless. This year we also had Mellow Mushroom pizza with some gluten free pizza as well.
