- good for office and home use

Linux Mint - great for home and hobby use - the favourite of Westlakes

- needs a computer running faster than 1GHz
- to keep your Windows - you need a freshly defragged hard drive with
10Gb of free space
- for a Linux-only install - back up all your data and you need a
10Gb hard drive

Vector Linux - for general use on computers running at 500MHz to 1GHz
(great for that superceded machine)
- need 96Mb RAM and 6Gb hard drive
- to keep Windows - defrag the hard drive and free at least 6Gb of
hard disk space
- Linux-only - back up your data, 6Gb hard drive

All installations performed by experienced users.

Try before you commit - we will try a 'live CD' that doesn't affect
your computer at all, just to check that everything will work OK and
you can see what Linux looks like on your particular machine.

Learners Give Computer Software Away

Sunday August 31, a local computer club, Westlakes Linux Learners, is
handing out and demonstrating free software in Toronto to celebrate
Software Freedom Day '08.

Software can cost more than the computer it is running on. Lack of
money is forcing many, otherwise law-abiding, people to use copied or
pirated programs because they can't afford the cost of legal software.
Unfortunately piracy only increases software prices and slows
development.

That is the opinion of Bruce Thompson, secretary of Westlakes Linux
Learners, who now uses only legal software but began his computing
with pirated software.

"When I finally decided to use only legal software, I was astonished
to find programs that not only replaced all my pirated ones, but were
given away and I was encouraged to pass them on," he said.

"There are thousands of the world's top programmers producing Free and
Open Source Software (FOSS) for the fun of it. These programs are
world class and used by businesses and millions of home computer users
like us," he said.

"In some cases these are the best products of their kind, the quality
is usually very high and support is amazing with communities on the
web and local users groups, such as the Learners, if you want support
face-to-face."

"Only a few propriatry programs can't be replaced or even improved
upon by a free equivalent. My favourites are the Firefox web browser
which replaces Explorer, OpenOffice replacing Office and the Gimp, a
Photoshop equivalent," he said.

Free software will run on Windows, Mac and Linux. CDs will be
available for all these systems. FOSS works well on superceded
computers too, unused machines built since 2000, can be turned into
speedy student or internet computers. "We will do free installations,
preferably if you register with us before the weekend." Bruce said.

This event is part of the leadup to Software Freedom Day on September
20, a worldwide celebration of FOSS. The goal is to educate the public
about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in
government, at home, and in business.

Locally, Newcastle's LOGIN group will host Pia Waugh, the
International President of Software Freedom International, for two
public talks at Newcastle University on August ___, they are giving
away software at Sunday computer markets, September 7 and 21 and and

The give-away will be at the Toronto Adventist Centre, in Parkside
Parade from 12 midday.

Seminar: "Careers and improving the world with Open Source" presented
by
Pia Waugh
Time: 18th August 2008 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Location: University of Newcastle, Engineering Precinct, Room EAG01

The University of Newcastle School of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science and LOGIN -
Linux Owner Group in Newcastle, are pleased to invite students and
parents to a seminar by one of the most influential people in
Australian IT, Pia Waugh.

In this seminar Pia is talking about two of her favourite subjects,
showing young Australians where the most fun and challenging IT jobs
are, and how technology is being used to improve the world and the
lives of millions of underpriveleged people now.

Pia says:
IT is seen as being anti-social, boring, and something that only
“nerdy” boys get into. I always stand in front of these kids and
proudly declare I am a geek (which I define as a person who does cool
stuff with tech) which blows their minds. A young, extrovert female
who loves travelling and trying to help make a better world. I talk to
them about the variety of jobs available and about how IT is always
changing and fun to get into (and) an important option for kids to
consider

Pia Waugh is an IT consultant and winner of a 2007 Young Achievers
award. She has spoken to thousands of school girls, encouraging them
to take the rewarding careers offered in the computing and IT fields.
Pia is also an internationally renowned speaker on Open Source
technology, a free software advocate and president of the
organisation running Software Freedom Day. She has strong ties to the
Linux
Australia organisation, holding past roles as both President and Vice
President. Pia is
a community leader both locally and internationally for the OLPC - One
Laptop Per Child initiative and an advocate of Women in Computing. You
