Saturday 24th August, saw the 18th running of the EPR CYCLE CHALLENGE, at the spectacular venue of TARLTON INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY,

for the 5th time. This also marked the 10th year that EPR Armed Reaction was involved in the event.

The weather conditions early morning of race day were gloomy, cold, windy, and also very misty. This was going to see slower times out on

the course, as the wind did not abate, but the misty conditions did eventually lift as the day wore on.

All funds raised by the event goes to various charitable and needy people in the community, and this is distributed by the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk, Sionspoort.

Mention must also be made of the 5 disabled athletes who participated in the 58km event, especially to the 2nd entrant across the line, on a hand pedalled machine!!

You are an inspiration.

The event went off with very few incidents, mainly a bit of a fall by a lady at the water point at 30km, suffering some nasty bruises in the process, and then the

normal aches, pains, and cramps. The medical coverage was again provided by Jean and his professional team from ER24.

The team from EPR Armed Reaction provided the lead vehicles, the fantastic sound at the venue, the Start and Finish arch, and also MAJOR sponsorship of the event.

Their personnel also went out early in the morning, putting out the route direction boards, and other signage required for the event.

Thanks to Johan Booysen, and his team, for their continued support.

Lund Afslaers (Auctioneers) provided the sweep vehicles on the route, ensuring any entrants with mechanical failure, or ‘physical failure’,

were transported back to the finish venue. Thanks to Rudi Lund and his crew.

The fantastic venue of TARLTON INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY provided a fantastic backdrop for the event, and if you are interested in serious horsepower,

or just have an interest in speed, a recommendation is to go to www.tarltonrace.com, and attend Nationals, or any of the many other events.

Thanks to the team at the venue for also providing grub and drinks for the entrants requiring this, as well as 2-way radios for the organisers, electrical power,

and various other requirements.

Communication coverage over the whole route was provided by the radio hams of the West Rand Amateur Radio Club, and all of the major intersections

had a radio ham on hand to provide feedback on progress of the race, and provide essential communication regarding incidents and accidents.

The individual timing of each entrant was done by ChampionChip, and the results of the event can be found on www.championchip.co.za.

Westgate Wheelers also assisted with various cycling aspects of the event, in conjunction with the church community of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk, Sionspoort,

who use the funds generated from this event for their many community services.  Many of the marshals on the route are from the congregation, and must be thanked

for their time and contribution to the event.

The 2 fantastic bikes in the lucky draw were sponsored by Randgate Pharmacy, who have supported this event for many years, and we hope this relationship

will continue for many more years to come.

Rietchard Scrap Metals also sponsored certain of the running costs of the event, and their contribution is also greatly appreciated.

The officials from Central Gauteng Cycling provided control over the start area, and also ensured that the riders on the road adhered to the traffic rules,

and that there was fair play amongst the competitive licensed groups.

There were 4 water points along the route, and we thank the staff and teams from Secuquip, RDC, FSK, and Security Viewer-Videofied for their assistance.

The guys at Cycle Events provided the entry portal for all entrants, and ensured that the seeding of the riders was done in accordance with their abilities.

The venue for number collection was also arranged by the team, out at Cyclelab, Fourways, and they also assisted with late entries.

Various other sponsors also provided support in various ways, and with their continued support, this event is hoping to continue growing well into the future.

Lastly, to the cyclists! Thank you for your continued support of this event, because without YOU at this event, it would not take place.

We hope to see everyone back at next year’s event, the 19th Challenge.

The Organisers,

EPR CYCLE CHALLENGE
