Isabella’s – so far so good
=====================================================

Thanks to all of you who were at the kick-off session. We had a great
turnout and a great time.

For those who still haven’t been there, the food is fantastic,
reasonably priced, and comes in generous portions!

=====================================================
Free Admission?
=====================================================

Some sessions don’t charge. We don’t know how they survive. Jazz
musicians tend to not drink very much and they prefer to eat at home
for 1/10 the price. We understand that. We have seen the average
amount of money made at 4 venues in 3 years, which is no fortune even
on a good night!

Some musicians, however, have a real problem paying to play. We
understand that, too. If they are pros, why should they have to pay
when usually someone is paying them!

So what to do?! We want to continue to attract all kinds of jazz
musicians from all over the lower Hudson Valley. We don’t want any
barriers to any musicians coming to play.

So we have decided to do a $5 suggested donation. We hope as many as
possible of you will respect it. For those of you opposed to it
philosophically, we hope it will not be a deterrent to your
participation.

Even the Cops Like It
=====================================================

Ossining is the place to be. The band was swingin’ and so was the
door. In fact it was open for quite a while. The cops showed up and
Dennis was the only one who noticed; everyone else was concentrating
intently on the music. He feared the worst… but they only came up,
closed the door, and drove off again!

Joke of the Week
=====================================================

A mindreader is at a nightclub one night and decides to give a small
demonstration of her abilities.

First, she reads the mind of the lead guitarist: "Wow, look at all the
cute chicks who showed up tonight! Good crowd!"

Then the drummer: "Lots of people showed up tonight...Great! we're
going to make good money tonight"

Then the Keyboard player: "All three of these guys have no
appreciation of my talent...What a bunch of losers"

Finally, the Bass player: "C...G...C...G..."

=====================================================
Thank You
=====================================================

This past week, many people took the opportunity to support the Jam
via the $5 suggested donation. As we were discussing last week at the
session, the venue that we were in for over 3 years, namely Jackson
and Wheeler, certainly did not make money every week, but the owners
never missed timely payment to the house band and only rarely
cancelled due to private parties. They were committed to the Jam even
though they sometimes lost money on it because, for one thing, the
owners liked jazz; secondly, perhaps the blues jam helped to carry the
jazz jam. But thirdly and maybe most importantly, they had a
reputation to protect as one of the hot spots for live music in the
area.

Isabella’s has no such reputation to protect. By all accounts the
food is excellent and inexpensive. They are conveniently located and
they also do take-out pizza. They don’t need to have live music to
promote themselves.

That being said, Isabella’s is a terrific venue for the Westchester
Jazz Jam for all of those reasons (AND they play jazz on the jukebox
during the week!)

So thanks to all of you who supported and will continue to support the
$5 suggested donation. And, just to reiterate from last week’s
newsletter: for those of you philosophically opposed to the idea of
pay-to-play, we hope you will come and participate in the jam anyway.

Next Week – Oct 1st – Fourth Anniversary Party!
=====================================================

Next week we celebrate 4 years! Can you believe it?

By popular demand, we are going to feature the Spacious Quartet for
the party’s first set, featuring:

Sean Nowell – tenor sax
Peter Brendler – double bass
Jon Doty – drums & cymbals
Dennis Winge – guitar & compositions

As you may remember, this group debuted in June of this year at
Ruben’s, and those who heard the group are still asking when they
might have an opportunity to do so again. We hope you will join us
next week to celebrate our anniversary!

Quote of the Week
=====================================================

“Every Act is Creative

The canvas of your life is very large and spacious. Your life
circumstances are painted on this canvas in colors you have chosen
through your conscious or unconscious use of the creative process. It
is possible to turn what appear to be mundane activities – sweeping
the street, cooking, washing dishes, changing diapers, mowing the lawn
– into art forms. It was St. Augustine who said that you can identify
a saintly being by the way they pick up an ordinary object, such as a
pen. Spiritual attunement causes us to touch everything with ultimate
respect, as an act of divine love and gratitude. Each of us is a
candidate for living in such a precious way, for living such an
elevated life.

These illuminating words of one of the world’s most creative spirits,
Albert Einstein, underscore the value of your contribution to the
world: ‘It can easily be seen that all the valuable achievements,
material and spiritual, which we receive from society have been
brought about in the course of countless generations by creative
individuals. Without creative personalities able to think and judge
independently, the upward development is an unthinkable as the
development of the individual personality without the nourishing soil
of the community.’”
