Hey Everyone. I am so excited to announce that dancer, Joti Singh and drummer, Bongo Sidibe both from San Francisco will be in Austin in January to teach Bhangra dance and West African drum and dance. If you like West African dance, I'm sure you'll love Bhangra.....you know that awesome, fun dancing you see in Bollywood movies. I've been wanting to try Bhangra for such a long time and I can't wait to try it. It's just delightful and fun. Joti Singh is a choreographer, performer, and instructor of Bhangra dance from Punjab, India and dance from Guinea, West Africa. She is the Artistic Director and founder of Duniya Dance and Drum Company. Joti was recently an Artist-in-Residence at CounterPULSE, a performance space in San Francisco. In addition, Joti participated in the Alliance for California Traditional Arts' Apprenticeship Program with Guinean dancer Alseny Soumah and received the organization's Traditional Artist Development Grant. She has traveled to Guinea several times to study with Master Dancer Moustapha Bangoura and other members of Les Ballets Africains. She is currently working on a project on the Punjabi-Mexican community in California and will participate in the Margaret Jenkins CHIME program with Mexican Folklorico dancer Zenon Barron in 2009. Joti teaches and performs Bhangra and Guinean dance throughout the Bay Area.
Alpha Oumar "Bongo"
Sidibe is a traditional drummer from Conakry, Guinea in West Africa.
Bongo studied with Master Drummer Mamady Keita at his school, Tam Tam
Mandigue, Guinea, and participated in his workshops in Conakry and Balandougou,
Mamady's village. Before leaving Guinea, he was co-director of Balandougou
Kan, a group of traditional percussionists and dancers. Since arriving
in the U.S., Bongo has performed with Rhythm Village and Duniya Dance
and Drum Company.
