Where do the TAFs come from?

Pilots are accustomed to using the Terminal Aerodrome Forecast, or
TAF, but many do not realize where they come from. In the United
States and its territories, the civilian TAFs are written and
monitored 24 hours a day by meteorologists with the National Weather
Service.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Lubbock NWS Office, we have
forecast and warning responsibility for the 24 counties within the box
from Friona to Childress to Aspermont to Denver City. Public
forecasts are issued, at minimum, twice per day with updates as
necessary. Aviation forecasts are written, at minimum, 4 times per
day at 00Z,06Z,12Z, and 18Z with amendments as required.

The Lubbock office has responsibility for the TAF at Lubbock Preston
Smith International (KLBB) and Childress Municipal (KCDS.) Our
neighboring offices include Amarillo, Norman, OK, San Angelo, Midland,
and Albuquerque.
