Hi aviation enthusiasts:
It's been a little while since we've had something of interest to pass along, but we now have a few items for you.
Closing of the Weather Observer Station at KLBB:The FAA, which controls the budget and contracts for airfield observers has given notice that the 24 hour contractor weather observer position at Lubbock's Preston Smith International Airport will be terminated as of May 1, 2013. Observations will continue to be made via the Automated Surface Observation System (ASOS) at the field. Augmentation by these observers typically occurs when conditions are near a flight rules category or when there is a weather phenomena in the vicinity such as reports of towering cumulus, a tornado, or hail. I understand that the task of augmenting obs will be turned over to the FAA at that time. There will undoubtedly be a learning curve for FAA folks who would do the augmentation. Therefore, I recommend extra situational awareness when planning your flights beyond May 1 as there could be some changes in the quality of the observation as people at the TRACON come up to speed.
New national situational awareness displayThe NWS is now offering a preview of what is hoped to be a new situational display for the main web site. You can quickly view national radar, satellite, watches, warnings, and the like in a "Slippy Map" format. Give it a try at
http://preview.weather.gov/edd/The PING projectThe National Severe Storms Laboratory has launched a new experiment to provide verification for weather events near the surface. You can use your iPhone or Android to submit reports to the NWS (we subsequently can view these along with radar data in the office.) The app also lets you see what others are reporting. Check out their web page at

I also take requests for items on our web page which you think may be helpful.
There is only one person who can get all the weather information need for a safe flight....YOU!
