It sounds like there is a bit of confusion on calling the 9 ball so here is a brief explanation on "Calling the 9 Ball".
The 9 ball is the only ball that needs to be called in the game. As long as the shooter makes a legal hit, if any ball drops (not the cue ball), the shooter remains at the table. If the 9 ball is called and goes in the wrong pocket, it is spotted and the player remains at the tabe as long as another ball is made. If another ball is not pocketed, the 9 ball spots and the shooter's inning at the table is done.
