Unless we carry some sort of sign the board will not be able to identify who is there for what agenda item. WHA's request (submitted by SCC) is not an agenda item. Neil is making a public comment on a policy issue and trying to make a connection to West High. There are a couple of agenda items that may bring out a number of people, the BOE will know that there are concerned community in attendance and Neil is a spokes person for WHA. It may serve us better if we attend and not give a count of our numbers this time. What do you all think?

We did very well coming as a fairly large group to the SCC meeting, it would be great of we could repeat this tomorrow.

From my family - two parents and two students.....

Two additional issues I would like to raise:

1. I think it would be great if a student representative could speak to the Board .

2. How do we show our support once there? How will the Board know why we are all attending? Can we have any signs?
Just brainstorming here....

WHA members,

I am out of town conducting a surgery today that could not be reasonably arranged, and hence will be out of contact and will not be able to attend the Board meeting tonight. My inability to answer emails today is not due to lack of interest.

The matter of the request to the BOE regarding inappropriate involuntary transfers of teachers is largely in the hands of the SCC, acting on behalf of the WHA.

However, as David indicated, I encourage WHA members to communicate to the BOE their support for the SCC request by:

1) writing to the BOE and

2) showing up to the BOE meeting tonight and voicing their support, to the extent relevant, appropriate, and allowed (there are limits to what can/should be said; and there are no guarantees).  Neil of the SCC will be attempting to speak.  It makes sense that he lead the charge, and that others provide supporting voices as appropriate.

Good luck, and carry on!

My family will be there this evening (2 parents and (likely) one student).

It does not seem that we will be able to talk unless we register by
noon today. And I would rather Neil speak on behalf of the SCC, take
up the 5 minutes allowed for a group public comment. Whileprobably we
cannot carry signs (not sure of this!), Neil can indicate that he is
speaking on behalf of <the dozen of us/fill in number> who are at the
meeting and about 300 others who are not in the room. And then he
makes the SCC request couching it in a call for implementing
educational best practice in the district.

See you this evening at 6:30.

I was told not to mention anything whatsoever about the transfer
issue, so I have revised the statement I plan to make at the School
Board meeting. The new statement is below. -Neil Cotter
-----------------------------
I want to thank the Salt Lake City School Board, Superintendent
Withers, District employees, teachers, parents, students, and all
interested parties present tonight for this opportunity to speak.

My name is Neil Cotter, and I have a daughter who is a senior at West
High School. I have also volunteered at West High on a weekly basis
for the past five years and in Salt Lake City schools for the past 12
years. I am also a member of the West High SCC.

Tonight I propose that the Salt Lake City School District take a much
more active role in recognizing and celebrating excellent academic
performance of students and teachers in AP and IB courses. I suggest
that the district tabulate and publish (on the web) the performance of
district students on AP and IB exams relative to national (and
international) averages. Excellent performance should be noted, and
students and instructors with excellent track records should be
publicly acknowledged. The district has much to be proud of, and we
should celebrate the success of our children and teachers.

The advantages of such attention to excellence are threefold:
First, a district which celebrates excellence attracts more excellent
teachers. Teachers want to be associated with excellence. Excellent
results imply that there is support for teachers and academics. From
my personal experience, I can tell you that, in the past, many high
school teachers took jobs in the Salt Lake District because of its
support for excellence in education.

Second, excellent schools foster economic growth. Executives want to
live in communities with excellent schools. Such schools provide an
education for the executives' children and are a source of good
employees. A city with a superb school can truly boast that it offers
everything its citizens could desire. Indeed, a successful school
raises all boats. If a student applies for a job and tells the
employer, "I went to MIT", for example, the applicant experiences a
surge of respect. Likewise, students in Salt Lake Schools can benefit
by saying I attended one of the nation's top high schools.

Third, successful public schools are the antidote to attacks on public
education. Superb performance is the best and only way to silence
critics of public education. The Salt Lake District can create a
great future for public education by paying homage to those who excel
at it in AP and IB classes.

Thank you.

As some of you already know, I was very disappointed and frustrated with
the BOE decision not to allow Neil any mentioning of the problem at West.
This is really difficult to comprehend as all he was going to say was this:

"Moving to my first topic, I will avoid any mention of names and
address only my role in a request before you that comes from the West
High SCC and WHA. I would like to inform the board that I am one of
two people, (Dave Galvan being the other), who were selected by the
SCC at West High to write a letter and deliver a request to you to
review a district decision about staffing at West High School. Every
board member should have received a cover letter and supporting data
in a notebook regarding this case. My name is on the cover letter.
You may employ me as a contact person, although I am not an official
spokesperson for the entire SCC or WHA"

Something is clearly quite wrong with the way things are being conducted within
the SLCSD. I am planning to e-mail all board members tonight to voice my disappointment.
I will forward this letter to this group.
Tomorrow I plan to e-mail SLCSD superintendent
with a cc to both newspapers as well as Paul Rolly.

Greetings,
The board meeting tonight illustrated the control SLC District has
over communications. For now, a better way to get a message through
appears to be for each person to contact school board members or the
superintendent directly whenever the mood strikes.
Those present at the board meeting decided to have a meeting of the
group in about one week to plan what to do next. A date and location
will be sent out soon. Please think of ways we can call attention to
the illogic of Dan's transfer, and we'll discuss them at the next
meeting.
More importantly, though, we need to find ways to help the physics
students at West High right away. Perhaps we could find someone at
the U to tutor the students. Other thoughts?
