Welcome to the West Lake Irregulars club page on Google Groups.

This page is meant for sharing information about Hangzhou, China's RC
sailing club where members and those interested in trying something
completely different can learn, participate and be kept up-to-date on
our sailing schedule in 2009.

This all began over a few drinks between a few frustrated expats at
the dinner party last July while talking about what we miss backhome.
China certainly offers a lot to do besides the normal routine of work,
dining, shopping, sightseeing, pub crawls and KTV, but some of the
outdoor activities we used to enjoy were lacking.

Sailing was one topic brought up and the notion that its more fun to
do it in groups. I had several RC sailboats at the time, so one thing
led to another and soon eight Monsoon 900s were purchased in a group
buy and the rest is history. Who knows... we might eventually even
get to the point of racing around the marks once we get this sailing
thing figured out. One thing is for certain & that is, besides
sailing we'll always find time for interesting conversation amid the
cold pijiu, even champagne (thanks again Guido!), on the waterfront
beside the ancient teahouses on Maojiabu & Xiang Hu.

If you happen to live or are visiting the area, even if you don't
sail, please feel free to come join us on the water on the weekends
we're out and about.

Be sure to check back often for updates to our sailing schedule,
member discussions, recaps of our outings and to upload your photos.

Hi, I just joined the group today, I'll be arriving in HZ at the
beginning of March. Though I'm interested in RC sailing, does anyone
have any info on prototype sailing in the Hangzhou area? I'm an
accomplished racer (1000 hours of sea time this year alone, 30 years
exp.) in San Francisco Bay and Pacific waters and on a variety of
boats (2 meter to 18 meter), and it's the one thing I know I'll rue
about my relocation. Thanks in advance.

Ken.

Ken,

Welcome to Hangzhou! We look forward to meeting you once you get
settled in this March.

Unfortunately you won't find much sailing here in the immediate area,
hence the reason for RC. Best bet would be Shanghai's SBYC which is
an established club on Dianshan Lake about 2 hours away that offers a
large selection of club & personal craft. http://www.shanghaibyc.org.
Hangzhou has a sailing club based out of Maojiabu that sails on West
Lake, but unless you enjoy Optimist Prams you'll be sailing on one of
the club sailboards. Sailing can also be found on Qiandao Lake 1-1/2
hours to the south.

There is no blue water sailing around here unless you consider the
short flight to Qingdao, HongKong or Hainan as being in the
neighborhood.

Let us know if there is anything you need in terms of relocation
advice or assistance. We have a broad range of members that can help
get you pointed in the right direction.

Hello Ken - Chuck is correct - the only place to sail here is at
Dianshan Lake, about 50 minutes west of Shanghai. They sail a mixture
of cats and a locally-designed trimaran. There are also two 9 metres
offshore yachts there, but this is just a (very) big lake.

Best wishes
Ian
