Fromtime to time, I accidentally trigger the creation of a 'sticker' by holding my finger on the subject of a photo (as described in this Apple user guide). This can be pretty annoying, but it's worse than annoying if you happen to do it in the Files app, because if you then move your finger, it duplicates the subject and plonks it down right over the top of your original photo!
It seems that you have one brief chance to undo this, by tapping on the tiny blue ellipsis button and selecting 'Delete'. However, the first time I did this, I didn't know what to do and now the photo is ruined by having this 'sticker' on it permanently. I could find no way to undo this action or restore the photo to its original version, nor can I find any online instructions on how to remove it.
The sticker does appear to exist on a separate layer because if I touch and hold the original subject, it creates yet another complete duplicate of it, despite the fact that the first sticker is obscuring part of it. When you do this, the original photo is darkened, making both stickers stand out from the background. However, in this state, there still seems to be no way to select or delete the first sticker.
Rachel, so sorry to hear this happened to you with such a precious photo. It's annoying that Apple doesn't make it easy to jump back to a previous version of a single file on the iPhone like you can with Time Machine on the Mac.
All I can suggest at this stage is that we both submit feedback to Apple about this and hope they introduce a fix at some stage. I am slightly hopeful, as I said before, because it does seem as though the sticker is on a separate layer.
Yes, I did try markup mode, but it doesn't allow me to select the sticker. Those instructions are for deleting a sticker from your sticker collection (a feature I don't use), not from the image itself.
Thanks Richard. There appears to be no way to select an answer as being correct or even best. In any case, after receiving two upvotes, it's been automatically labelled as 'Best reply' by Apple's magical algorithm.
Thanks Richard. There appears to be no way to select an answer as being correct or even best. In any case, after receiving two upvotes, it's been automatically labelled as 'Best reply' by Apple's magical algorithm, which also seems to sort all the replies into some incomprehensible order whether they have been upvoted or not. (I know one can manually select 'Sort By: Oldest', but that gets reset each time you come back.) It's as if Apple tried to take Stack's best answer sorting and apply it to a discussion forum, which is a big usability fail if you ask me. Anyway, I'm getting off-topic now so I'll leave it there (and see if the algorithm correctly leaves this comment at the bottom of the page ?).
You can change the default sort option to "Oldest" by choosing the Edit Profile option after selecting your user icon in the upper right. Then, after you sign in and visit a page, all the comments will be sorted how you like.
Also, for the record, I can't replicate the other issue I mentioned about my draft comment getting published, leading me to wonder if I may have been editing an already published comment when I left the page. So that one we can probably put down to human error.
I want to tell you how much I appreciate you and thank you for your help. I just found an old camera and accidentally made a sticker and put it on a photo in files, of myself at 10 years old and my mother that I could never forgive myself for ruining. You just saved me from a hard cry session.
To elaborate, when I tap on the stickers option in messages, (it is there), the plus option is not listed in any of the tabs, so I can only send stickers from GarageBand, Memoji Stickers, and with emojis. Occasionally, I will see the sticker tab after I have tapped the option, but it disappears the moment I see it.
In the Photos app , you can make stickers from the subjects in your photos and animated stickers from the subjects in your Live Photos. Then use your stickers to decorate messages, photos, notes, and more.

@JesterPizzle It is working as expected on my S23 Ultra. It does however depend on the image content. When I try the long press on a screenshot of a lot of icons it does want to save the whole image as an sticker instead of just where I did the long press. If I use another photo with a well defined item, the long press method properly selects the part of the image and only uses that as a sticker.
@JesterPizzle I just got an update for Photo Editor (v3.4.21.41). One item it mentions on the change list is "Changed Object eraser's methods of selecting objects (added Magnetic lasso option)". Hopefully that fixes the issue that you are having.
