Dear All,

Sebastien Ancavil from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been spearheading the
use of drones in Cox's Bazar. He will be sharing his work and insights with us during a webinar
presentation on May 22, 10am NY Time. Link:https://www.freeconferencecall.com/wall/werobotics

Summary: Since 25 August 2017, an estimated 687,000 Rohingya have crossed into Bangladesh fleeing
violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, increasing the total Rohingya population in Cox’s Bazar to over
898,300. New arrivals are living in spontaneous settlements with an increasing need of humanitarian
assistance. The Needs and Population Monitoring (NPM) unit has used drone technology since October
2017 to support the data collection teams, site planning and site management units, UN/NGO agencies,
and Government of Bangladesh to provide rapid and detailed mapping of Rohingya refugee camps and
sites. Although the Kutupalong refugee camp has dramatically expanded, the Rohingya refugees are
living in densely populated areas. NPM has integrated the drone data acquisition and analysis in several
tools and products for an overall picture of the emergency. With the upcoming monsoon season, drone
imagery acquisition provided support for updated flood and landslide modeling/analysis and relocation
planning.
