Hi gang,
Sorry I wasn't able to make the last round of classes on Tuesday evenings.
Where and when are the dates for the next round of classes?
Looking forward to volunteering with Wenches again soon.

Hey all!

Just wondering if I could put in a vote for either Monday or Thursday nights for the next round of classes?

I think there had been talk of holding the next session in June, and the third in September? Kathleen was contacting Bike Sauce about potentially having one of the sessions in the east end. Do people have opinions about location (Sauce, Bike Pirates, CBN) or day of the week?

Look forward to seeing everyone again and hope you're all surviving this rain...

Monday or Wednesday would work better for me - can't make Thursdays.

Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays in June work for me, except that I'll have to skip out on some weeks that I'm away. I am excited about the possibility of teaming up with Bike Sauce in the east end, but CBN and Bike Pirates are definitely closer to my home and workplace. I think I would prefer to see Wenches continue to foster our positive working relationship with CBN when we're hosting workshops in the west end. Unless we wanted to piggy-back on Women's and Trans drop-in hours on Sundays at Bike Pirates and run workshops from 5pm-7pm on Sunday evenings.

I also like the idea of a series of new workshops that I've heard people say out loud before: how to replace your chain, how to true a wheel, prepping for long-distance riding, and winterizing your bike. Also, how to build a bike cart would be rad. Or doing a workshop focussed on riding with babies/infants/small children, etc.

Now I'm just brainstorming.
Good night,
xo Candace

Great comments Candace!
I'm heading out on a bike trip from Vancouver to Inuvik (Northwest Territories) this July and would really be interested in the "prepping for long-distance riding" you suggested.

hey everyone

i like all these ideas, but right now there is not much happening with wenches. we still need a poster, and Jane Tooley is our contact with Bike sauce (Jane? what's going on with bike sauce?). if we don't team up with them then evergreen brick works is an option but we have to sort things out SOON if we're gonna run courses in June. it is usually way too busy to do any in July or August so i really don't think we should miss out on June.

i'm available for most of june except fri june 3 & the week of June 21-27 when i'm hoping to go to new york.

Xuan-Yen was talking to bike pirates for us and they said we could use friday (i think) evenings. x-y, is this right? we are hoping to go there in september but if bike sauce is still up in the air maybe we can move our bike pirates dates to June.

so let's figure this out! and as far as teaching other courses like chains and wheels, we need teachers for those courses so get out there and recruit women bike mechanics that you know that are interested in volunteering!

Hi all,

Last I spoke to Bike Pirates, there was discussion that perhaps
Sundays would be better than Fridays --- since Fridays often are (at
least once a month) Bike Build nights (there was talk perhaps that
could be accommodated --- like they could start their build later if
we ran courses. I couldn't get a consensus). Again, I could ask the
whole group formally and suggest Candace's time slot of 5 to 7 pm
(Women's and Trans usually runs from 12 to 6 pm) on Sundays for
September.

How does that sound?

My availability for June is still up in the air, unfortunately.

I love your suggestions/brain storm ideas Candace!

Hey folks,

someone else possibly try popping in or e-mailing?

Hope you're all doing well!

Mondays at CBN in June if we do not hear back from Bike Sauce by the end of the month? Kathleen, can you check with CBN to see if that's cool?

I know a mechanic and former wench who volunteers at Charlie's Freewheel. I can pick her brain about maybe doing one special workshop there sometime this summer... I will see if she can maybe even be the one to facilitate it.

Xuan-Yen, I still like the idea of Wenches workshops on Sundays 5-7pm at Bike Pirates in September. Big bonus is that they have a kitchen too for preparing suppertime snacks.

Hey wenches

I work til 6 Sunday's so I won't be able to make it. Make sure someone is committed to being at the space for the beginning & end of each session before committing to a time.

Ill email bike sauce but I dont think we need to go to CBN again. Shannon said she is in contact w brick works. Why don't we go there? Who could commit to that?

I'm not available Monday June 6 (CBN board meeting) or the dates I previously mentioned: June 3-5, 22-27. I need to know ASAP the schedule so I can book off the appropriate time at work.

Not sure if its going to work for June workshops at this point, maybe we can just plan one at a time and charge $5-10 per session. We could do longer classes clumping the first two and last two workshops together and charge $10-20+.

I'll let you know if I hear from bike sauce but let's explore other options.

Hey!

I also like the idea of Bike Pirates Sundays in Sept 5-7.

Sounds like for June, our options are
->Evergreen Brick works
(I can commit to this; I know it's further away for most people)
->CBN
(more convenient for a lot of people; however we'd talked about branching out)
->Bike Sauce
(who haven't responded to our emails. I've just tried emailing Anibal Davila who's involved there and will let you guys know if I hear back... but I know they are either in the middle of/recently moved location so they might be a bit swamped?)
->Charlie's Freewheel
(X-Y mentioned this and it's a great idea, but might be a bit short notice for June since we haven't been in touch with them)

And sounds like Mondays are the best day. I propose we run from June 13 - July 4 to give ourselves an extra week to get organized. The stat holiday in June falls on that Friday I think so we should be good in terms of people on vacation. We should confirm the schedule soon re: people's time off work etc.

Does anyone have a poster? In terms of publicity, I think public libraries and bike shops would be great places to distribute it. Have we had any people emailing re: interest in June workshops?

Candace, the charlies' freewheel mechanic sounds like a great location! I'm excited to hear about how that goes :)

In terms of special sessions, maybe we could run a winterize-your-bike session in late fall, like late October or November? Since it's months away, we would have time to research it/find a suitable teacher? Depending on interest we could even run it more than once, since it would be a one-off thing...

Whew! This got long!! happy friday, everyone

just to give y'all an update, i contacted anibal yesterday as well and he said he'd get in touch with Jane. so let's not overwhelm him though i appreciate you emailing him Moira! the feedback i've heard about brick works is its difficult to get to and riding there in the dark is not ideal.

shannon- can we perhaps arrange a saturday or sunday workshop there, a double workshop even?

people HAVE been emailing about June but without advertising we will not have a full class. we do need a poster and people to distribute them. how is the poster coming (lulu, jane?). i know everyone has been busy but if we can get that done i can use my day off (fridays) to distro them for a couple hours.

Candace- have you looked into the charlie's freewheels option? any word on that? i am weary of planning a 4 week course at this point in the year. it is such a busy time and we had a bunch of participants miss at least one session last time. how about booking one-at-a-time workshops throughout the summer?

thanks for everyone's work, let's keep it rolling!

Hi all,

I'll send an email to Bike Works.  I held off in case Bike Sauce worked out.  I'll ask them about weekends, but we may find that they are busy themselves weekends as they're planning a rentals as well.  I agree that getting there can be a bit of a nuisance.

I'll let you know when I hear back.  Mondays work for me.

I'm happy to distribute posters as well.

I checked in with Bike Works and they promised to get back to me ASAP.  I asked for Mondays in June (sorry Kathleen - I forgot you weren't available June 6) but mentioned we were flexible on the day for 4 2-hour sessions or a day for one-off sessions over the summer.

Any news on Bike Sauce or a chance we can stay at CBN for June if Bike Works doesn't work?

Hey guys!

Thanks to everyone who has been contacting all the bike places to secure a spot for our next class!

Seeing that we're already into June (ok 1 more day left in May), I think we should maybe hold off on classes until fall?  I know that sounds kind of depressing but at this point I think it would be hard to promote our June class and get enough interest to fill our class.

Instead, maybe we can secure locations for our Sept and Oct classes now and promote the heck out of them during the summer?  I think that would give us enough time to get a poster done? Maybe get some t-shirts made (I'd be up for helping to design this!)?  Also maybe can get another train-the-trainer session in before the fall, too?

And perhaps we can have a few one-off sessions at Bike Works in June/July/August?

Just my 2 cents :)

---
On another note, it was so nice to see Jane and Kathleen at the City Hall Bike to Work event this morning :)   Anyone going to the Dandyhorse launch at the Gladstone tonight?

Me again!

My friend was asking about beginner bike courses that are closer to downtown Toronto:

Hey Toronto Cyclists Union & Cupcake Bike Ride I'm a new cyclist & am pretty nervous on my bike - I was interested in taking the ladies course offered through Can-Bike but it's all the way out at Kennedy and Eglinton - do either of you know of safety course with perhaps some general up keep & repair how-to for newbies in the core? Doesn't have to be just ladies but it'd

Would you guys want to hold a workshop for biking knowledge and safety? It might be fun!

Hey folks,

Sorry I've been soo MIA. Charlies is taking over my life! Anyways,
Annibal phoned me on the a few days ago and said that the bikeSauce
board is pretty divided on the issue of hosting wenches (as a women's
space) and they need more time to wait until another board member
returns from a trip and they can deliberate more. He apologized
profusely for having not returned the e-mails.

We agreed that I would phone him in two weeks to get the scoop. It
follows that a session in June won't be possible, but one in July
might be (providing they decided to host and we wanted to run it in
that busy summer month).

So that's the update from my end! Will let you all know what happens
when I phone Annibal in a week and a half.
