Team

If not anything, I urge you to at the least read the conclusion part of this doc. I just re-wrote the conclusion part alone. Rest of the doc is same as ver-1.  What I have tried to do in conclusion is to summarize the key recommendations that were mentioned in everyone’s input.

Brian: Have you started on building slides yet?

Thanks

/Raj

Subject: strategy - first cut

Team attached is the first cut of our case paper that consists of inputs from everyone except Lakshmi and Horatio. It took me quite a  bit of time to take one doc at a time, trim it as I felt right and ensure there is flow in the master doc after integration.

Lakshmi: Do you think you can see where and how you can fit key points from yours and Horatio’s piece in this?  As you will notice, we don’t need to fit everything from every doc. The goal is to pick the nuggets and key message and fit it in to the story.  I will be on the plane tomorrow from early morning until 3PM.  Hence wanted to get this out in whatever shape I have right now.  I think once we get the flow right, we can go back to fix rest of the issues like ref, etc.

All others, please do read it if you can and provide inputs to ensure it meets what Elena mentioned during our feedback session.

I have attached all the docs mainly as a ref in case you want to pick some more additional stuff from other docs. The priority is to get yours and HJ’s input wherever appropriate. Needless to say, you will notice some overlap in the content / messaging that is in yours and HJ’s doc.

Feel free to modify this doc’s flow as well as you deem fit.

Thanks

/Raj

Raj, I read the draft last night in its entirety and will now also read the new conclusion.

I think it's a very good start and flows fairly well. We still have some work to do -- e.g., Elena recommended defining terms better. I will try to highlight some of these points when I review the conclusion.

Another impression from my review was that it would be great if we could incorporate more data to support our positions. I would encourage others to think in these terms when you review it tonight.

One example, is there market data available on licensing of software for Juniper today? How much of SDN growth will be from a licensing perspective? In general, I think we should talk about licensing more as a new channel.

Good point Kevin on licensing. I took that piece from Brian's doc.
Brian: you want to see if you can find the data that Kevin is suggesting or something on those lines to substantiate the response / recommendation?

Thanks

I'm not seeing anything particularly about how much of SDN growth will be from licensing, or how much Juniper could expect, but I can write a paragraph about licensing software as a revenue stream. I'll work on that and send it out in a bit. If this is not what you are looking for, please give me a call.

Just don't spend too much time on it. Focus on your preso and if you have time, then work on this license issue.

Ok. Do you have a preference of value chain or SWOT for slide 3? I'll likely only have time to go over one of them.

You need to put the take always from both. You don't need to go over SWOT and VC. What you need is, the take away from SWOT and VC are : bla bla bla and these led us to our recommendations bla bla and feed in to the next slide.

Overall I thought the paper looked good. Here are my recommended changes. Let me know if you have any questions about any of my comments.

Thanks.

Raj and Team,

Here are some points based on the sample analysis that Elena posted (medical equipment, and Starbucks):

We have a good starting point, but it reads more like an essay rather than a consulting report -- not backed up by a lot of analysis and financials.

Based on the samples, here is how I feel it needs to be organized:
1. Company overview (most of Horatio's piece will go here, but it can be trimmed with more focus on products rather than on divisions in the company. Horatio included a lot of financials, which I like)
2. Industry overview -- we can use a lot what goes in here from our industry analysis
3. New trends and opportunities -- talk about mobility, cloud, big data, sdn and emphasize how sdn is the key for all segments -- most of what I wrote goes here, and Raj repeated most of what i wrote
4. SDN -- the disruptive innovation
-- We need to focus on what sdn does to the industry in terms of economics and not explain what it is (current doc explains what it is -- we can use some of this, but shift the focus to economic consequences)
5. Why sdn (or problem definition as both sample reports call it) -- we can add some of the plots from Cisco that I added and first two plots that Raj added
6. Possible solutions -- if we can identify a particular company to acquire as one of the sample reports did, that will be great
7. Financial benefit from focusing on SDN -- may be use a number for r&d spending and do discounted cash flow analysis
8. Strategic benefits (add this section if we can identify any, and I think we can give some financial impact on cloud and mobility)
9. Risk to core business -- cannibalization of routers etc. Also, here is where Rashida's piece about culture would go
10. What is the competition doing now
11. How will competition respond to Juniper's actions of investing in SDN

Finally, executive summary and conclusion need not be more than half a page each.

We need to add more exhibits -- Kevin's SWOT, value chain etc.

1. We can add an exhibit showing how current industry performs compared to market s&p (financials)
2. Juniper's market share in different segments(pie chart)
3. Market share of competition
4. Financial performance of different juniper segments
5. Environmental analysis for SDN
6. SWOT for Cisco
7. Best strategy to grow in SDN -- Something similar to exhibit 11 on page 24 of Medtronic
8. Sdn's impact on cloud, mobility -- similar to exhibit 14 on page 26 of Medtronic
9. 5- forces analysis of Sdn
10. Competitive landscape in sdn -- similar to exhibit 16 on page 27 of Medtronic
11. Juniper, Cisco financials
12. Discounted cash flow analysis of sdn investment
13. Ge/McKinsey matrix -- to see if juniper should divest anything
14. Capabilities analysis for juniper

I know this is a long list, but we should include at least some of these exhibits, and transform our report from essay to analysis.

Lakshmi,
Great inputs!. I completely agree that we need a lot of data in our report to substantiate what we have written. I personally don't have the bandwidth to incorporate all of the below stuff and come up with a new transformed report. Do you think you have the bandwidth to transform this essay report in the format you have mentioned below? I do have 3-4 hours tomorrow on my return flight and I can take whatever is the status of the copy at that time and continue to edit/modify as needed. If you and others on the team are pre-occupied with other tasks, then please let me know and I will try to do the best I can in the time I have on my hand from now until tomorrow night.

Thanks
/Raj

I can certainly try to help. First, I need to finish (actually start and finish) the LL report. Once that is done, I can put my energy into this.

Team-- By the way, Rashida, Kevin and myself are meeting for LL at the Thomas center at 9 pm tomorrow. I think the rest of you should join either to give us inputs or work on consulting report. Let us know.

I've made some additional changes to the version Horatio edited. But I agree that Lakshmi's suggestions warrant whatever time we can give to it. Really spot on.

I will try to put my piece of the LL report to bed soon, so that I can also give this priority attention tomorrow.

Perhaps we can divvy up the list.

Good evening,

Our fearless leader on the Juniper project got stuck driving from Chlt to Durham this evening... per his recommendation, I have compiled the comments submitted by Kevin and Rashida into the attached document. There were still some questions that remain on the highlighted items but these will not take long to resolve.

See everyone tomorrow!

Thanks.

Thanks, Horatio. We connected with Raj, the road warrior. Attached is my first draft of the Executive Summary that we were lacking.

Could you put another set of eyes on it?

I've tried to model it after the two sample reports Elena provided.

Rashida, Lakshmi and I are now working on the suggestions Lakshmi provided last night.
