, which of course anyone can join if they want to help with the administrative side of ONI.
I think the most important news for non-workgroup members is that we're adding more resources to the ONI space that will presumably travel with it in the future: a print and online resource library (including a directory of local freelance contacts) and a little fridge. Also, it's time to sign up for use of the Sentinel space in June, so please send payments ($10 if you'll be contributing content, $60 if not) to
p...@portlandsentinel.com.
Present: T.A., Ed, Becca, Michael
Becca facilitated. Michael took notes. Schedule says Michael will facilitate the next meeting (June 7 -- three-week break for Memorial Day weekend) and Barry will take notes.
Discussion included five areas:
Resource library. Our new stash at the Sentinel office now includes a dictionary, an AP style guide, Strunk and White, a funny journalism novel and some other stuff. T.A. and Mike both thought it'd be nice to start assembling a list of contact people at local outlets that accept freelance work. After some debate, it was decided that this should be a private, online list for ONI members, however that's defined. Mike volunteered to set up a Google spreadsheet for this.
Website. T.A. set a personal deadline of June 7 to draft a functioning
oregonnewsincubator.org, though he noted that income-generating work has to be his first priority these days.
Space. We decided that three of the four present weren't interested in Souk. We also decided that though the Sentinel space could be prettier, it feels like a newsroom and we don't mind that enough to worry about it.
Outreach/PR. Becca reported that Israel Bayer is interested in joining the ONI space, and that she's lobbying two other writer friends, too. Mike reported that Dennis has signed up on a cash basis for May.
Becca reported Cornelius's concern that the ONI-Sentinel partnership isn't producing as much volume as he needs to extend the agreement. It was generally agreed that the core problem has been slow recruiting, and that this might be due to a lack of outreach.
After discussion of how improve outreach, Becca volunteered to contact Bill and Michelle about a possible guest post on Michelle's blog about freelancing, T.A. volunteered to contact Betsy about possible sponsorship of Redoing Media and Mike volunteered to draft a guest post for Mitch Nolan's blog about Oregon media.
Becca also said she'd clarify with Cornelius how soon the deal might need to be amended.
A mini-fridge. It was decided that Mike, Becca and perhaps others would be more likely to spend full days at the Sentinel if there were a mini-fridge to store lunches. It was decided that the task of finding a mini-fridge for ONI members to collectively purchase would be delegated to ... Bill, since he's mentioned it a couple times. Unless he fights back.
