The Charmels' 1967 single "As Long as I've Got You" was honored by a straight cover from another girl-group, then sampled almost 30 years later on The Wu-Tang Clan's debut album. The RZA's production on "C.R.E.A.M." turned the melody into something foreboding, and when The Wu-Tang Clan performed live with Brooklyn's El Michels Affair backing it in 2005, a fourth permutation was born. Since then, El Michels has released a full-length album of Wu-Tang covers and recorded with Raekwon.

A girl group signed to Memphis' Stax/Volt label, The Charmels made a handful of singles, none of which gained much national play. "As Long as I've Got You" originally came out in 1967 and, notably, was the an early product of a collaboration between Isaac Hayes and David Porter. It's a deceptively delicate and melancholy ballad, with its fragile-sounding opening piano melody by the Stax house band falling into a heavy backbeat that gives the sweet voices of The Charmels some rhythmic density.

"As Long as I've Got You" might have remained forever obscure if the Wu-Tang's producing wizard The RZA hadn't decided to sample that opening piano melody for one of the group's big 1993 hits: "C.R.E.A.M." Like its original sample source, "C.R.E.A.M." is more than it initially seems: The chorus of "Cash rules everything around me / C.R.E.A.M. get the money / Dollar, dollar bill y'all" may seem like an unabashed celebration of materialism, but the words of Raekwon, Method Man and Inspectah Deck paint a complex picture of hustling as a matter of urban survival rather than conspicuous consumption.

The El Michels Affair put an unexpectedly up-tempo spin on "C.R.E.A.M." on the front end, with some forceful, funky licks that patiently hold back on making the cover obvious until nearly a minute in, when The Charmels' prickly piano melody comes tinkling in. This is definitely a cover of the Wu though, with the spare arrangement patterning itself after The RZA's dusted, dark and dissonant track. (For an added bonus, watch The El Michels Affair back Raekwon performing "C.R.E.A.M." live at New York City's Canal Room in 2006.)

Regardless of when they began to appear, because classical music is one of the most common genres to sample in pop and hip-hop songs, samples have also become one of the main ways in which young folks all around the world get introduced to classical music. [Jump to playlist]

Muse samples classical music in other songs, too. The group's "I Belong to You (Mon Cœur S'ouvre à Ta Voix)" cops to its classical inspirations in its title. As with "The Globalist," the song opens with an original melody before shifting gears to cover a beloved aria (in the original French!) from Camille Saint-Saëns's Samson and Delilah. The aria's name, as Muse notes in the song's name, is "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix," which is best known in English as "Softly awakes my heart."

"Runaway" is a song by American rapper Kanye West featuring fellow American rapper Pusha T, released as the second single from the former's fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010). The song was written by the artists alongside Malik Yusef, Emile, Jeff Bhasker, and Mike Dean, with the latter three co-producing it with West. The composition features repetitive piano riffs, intricate samples and a production style with several similarities to West's album 808s & Heartbreak (2008). Described as a deeply personal song in nature, it expresses West's thoughts on his failed relationships, and his acceptance of the media's perception of him. Lyrically, the song explores criticism aimed at West in the past.

During a concluding reprise of the chorus and the opening melody, West ends the song with a three-minute outro of vocoded and overdriven wordless singing accompanied by string sections harmonizing with his vocals.[19] It briefly begins with West speaking, usually transcribed as "I'ma be honest", before he begins singing, and the vocal effects drown out what is audible in his words.[20] Allmusic editor Andy Kellman was favorable to the outro, saying that "West blows into a device and comes out sounding something like a muffled, bristly version of Robert Fripp's guitar."[12][19] Slant Magazine's Matthew Cole interpreted the purpose of the outro as a "fantasy of escape through pure catharsis, with the vocoder literalizing Kanye's ability to transform his personal shortcomings into art."[12] Chicago Tribune writer Greg Kot described the production of the song in detail, writing:

Thomas Conner of the Chicago Sun-Times cited the song as the thesis statement to the rest of the album, calling it "epic" and musing that West's "difficulty in communicating makes him a menace in the real world, but it's pretty compelling on record."[22] Jonah Weiner of Slate viewed that the three minute conclusion of the song was the most arresting moments on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.[20] Chris Martins of Spin called the song a piano driven epic, and noted that there was only one way to "interpret the early message sent by 'Runaway': he was calling himself an asshole".[25] IGN's Chad Grischow, felt that the three minute conclusion was over-long, but commented that with the "icy chill of the piano and naked beat sound fantastic" while also calling the production soaring.[18]
