Earlier this week Barrie spoke about the critical hairpin bend on the Maerdy Mountain. Here's an image of 20388 negotiating it with Aberdare in the background.

What appears to happen is, the driver moves his vehicle onto the opposite side of the road as he approaches the bend and pauses for any oncoming traffic to stop, then follows round on the opposite down of the road until the bend is cleared. Pretty spectacular to watch. Shame the sun wasn't out. Grrr.

Hi Tony, I was thinking of all the fun in the snow and ice and am looking for some interesting events to include in my website page on the 172 route. It must be a nightmare for the drivers when two vehicles meet in the hairpin and losing traction. Do Stagecoach send out a staff vehicle before the 0540 leaves Aberdare?

Thanks Luke, but don't be duped into thinking that there were two vehicles following each other!!! This is two pictures taken a couple of seconds apart and rolled into one using layers and masks.

Very clever, I did actually think that might be the case. Need a very steady hand or tripod for that though of which I have neither.

Lol. A tripod with what took three seconds for this movement would produce a continuous blurr. I took the two pictures without any movement of the camera, put one picture on top of the other, set up a mask in case I made a mistake with the eraser tool and removed the part of the first picture which revealed the front of the vehicle in the second picture.

Talking of interesting photographic effects, Martin, your photo taken
in Aberdare on your Service 172 gallery (http://www.stagecoach-
cymru.co.uk/172-20391-3.html) shows an interesting destination
display. I don't remember 'Tonygraig' from my time in South Wales, but
then it's quite a long time ago, and I'm getting older, so perhaps
that's why...

Nigel,

Looks like an abbreviation for Tonypandy / Penygraig / Tonyrefail.
lol. I'll look out for the Penypandy and Penyrefail destinations.

Was even more fun before they widened the 3 hairpin bends, had many a
scared passenger when I stood up in the cab of an RS to look down on
the up road to see if there was anything coming before going around
the bend. Was fun in an MW with no power steering too, had to hit it
right first time or reverse off the barrier.
