This Bristol VR had East Lancs. bodywork, without an engine bustle, and was new to Sheffield Corporation in 1972 passing to South Yorkshire PTE in 1974. Crosville acquired this one and five others of the batch in 1980.

Seen here at Welshpool.

Am I right in thinking that these vehicles brought about a strike which led to the closure of Crosville's Wrexham garage?  They were not fitted with power steering and drivers blacked them.

There were 3 - HVG 931-3 (OWE 267/72/3K) which arrived in early 1981.  HVG 936 (OWE 280K) was also allocated to Machynlleth for a while.

I think that one would say that this design does have an engine bustle
- in the sense that the engine is enclosed in a separate area that
protrudes from the bodywork. The type without a bustle is typified by
the ECW style on Bristol VR chassis, in which the area immediately
above the engine is enclosed within the bodywork, and the rear face is
essentially flat.

I don't know about these East Lancs bodied vehicles, but the ex-West
Midlands MCW bodied vehicles, mentioned earlier, were rather unusual
in that (as far as I can remember) the upper deck extended rearwards
slightly further than the engine bustle.

No not quite correct Richard. Crosville hired 10 Bristol VRs ex West Midlands PTE which were not fitted with power steering and which were need for extra work following deregulation in the Liverpool area. It was these buses which caused a strike at the Love Lane Depot and resulted in its ultimate closure.

The strike at Wrexham was over pay not vehicles.

My apologies. Yes you are quite correct Nigel these buses do have an engine
bustle. I misread what Glyn said, I thought he meant that the engine bustle
was similar to the early Atlanteans and Fleetlines in style. I was trying to
point out in my second photo that the bus didn't have a bustle like these
but had the standard VR type, a large lump stuck on the back with no
pretence of styling. I must read the messages more fully next time!
