“The Three Leaders Debate”
The general election came to Wellsway in a big way this week when we held our own version of the Leadership Debates. The event was brilliantly organised by Jack Cooper and Isaac Palmer in Yr 13. Huge congratulations to them and to the students who took part as candidates – Alex Hooper, Alex Bush, Tony Saunders, Jess Tilley and Danielle Vrublevskis. The debate started at lunchtime when all students had the opportunity to come and listen to the student candidates, representing each of the three main political parties, taking part in a question and answer session. This was followed after lunch by a Sixth Form assembly where the three local candidates, Dan Norris, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Gail Coleshill all took to the platform. Each of the candidates was invited to make a three minute introductory speech and then each was given one minute to respond to the questions from the floor. This was a fascinating experience that brought the election to life, quite literally, and I am very impressed by how knowledgeable our students are and how interested in the election. As a school we take very seriously our responsibility to encourage young people to participate as active citizens and we hope this experience will help them when they cast their vote next Thursday.

Mock General Election
All students will be given the opportunity to vote in our mock general election next week. The plan is to learn more about our voting system and its history, discuss democracy and consider some of the current issues and then vote. The plan is to come up with a result for Wellsway School, our constituency and then a national result based on the votes from schools all around the country. I encourage all of our students to find out about what the different parties stand for ahead of the vote. I will publish the result of our vote in the next Ammonite.

Year 11 Progress File Presentation Friday 14 May 2010
A reminder of the invitation in last week’s Ammonite for parents/carers of Year 11 students to attend the above Presentation. There will be an attendance slip on the bottom of the key dates letter coming home with your son/daughter shortly. It would be helpful if this could be returned promptly to give us an indication of the number of guests for this event. Thank you. A reminder also, that copies of all letters relating to Year 11 are available on the school website.

Year 11 Rewards
There are a number of very exciting things to look forward to for Year 11 students in the coming weeks. As part of our rewards programme we will be awarding students a share in the £1000 prize fund for Year 11 students at the celebration assembly on 14th May. The top achievers in the credit programme and those with the very best attendance will also be entered into a prize draw for prizes.
The last date to receive credits will be Friday 7th May. Our top achievers as we enter our last week include: Hannah Cheung, Livvi Edwards, Daniel Axe, Bethany Nall, Jessica Damrel, Aisling Comley, Grace Carey, Ellie Baldock, Hannah Bond, Mary Browne, Nicholas Bailey and Josh Breen.
In addition Mr Page and Mrs Frost are busy planning the summer Leavers’ Ball. It has been explained to students that tickets will be on sale to those students who meet and maintain our expected standards. We are very pleased with the mature approach our Year 11 students have displayed this year and believe that, with continued effort and hard work, they will be successful in their final examinations and beyond.
Mr Page and Mrs Frost are also putting together the programme for the Year 11 Leavers’ Ball in June. This is always a spectacular and enjoyable event. We are pleased to make these events available to Year 11 students but need co-operation in response.

Stranger Danger
We have received reports of a serious incident involving a secondary age student in the Chew Valley School area. The student had alighted from the bus at her normal stop and was walking home when a car with a female occupant attempted to grab her. Fortunately the student had the presence of mind to escape and, we understand, is safe if somewhat shaken by the experience.
The details and description of the vehicle and its occupants are that it was a female driver with blond hair and there was a male passenger with shaven, dark hair. The car itself was purple with a pink/black interior and dark tinted windows. It is important that we all underline to students the importance of personal safety when out and about beyond the security of home and school. Tutors are underlining key messages with students in school and I know parents will want to talk to their children about staying safe.

A word from our Local Police.
Our local Police have asked us to inform parents and other road users that there will be strict enforcement of the law in the vicinity of the schools in Chandag Road and around the Wellsway School site. This will include Penalty Notices for speed and parking offences. In recent times the Police have issued verbal warnings and will now issue Penalty Notices where offences are seen to be committed.
